The Self Taught Community – The Doers, what is the Secret?

#Authentic content creation #Mystory #ThroughMyLense

I belong to one unique community called the self taught, I’m always curious and aspires to learn diverse techniques and skills in the chosen field with a strong drive for implementation by combining theoretical and practical learning.

I strongly believe everyone has a great story and ideas on how we can make the world a better place, but a few have scratched the surface on how to go about it, this is what I term as walking the talk. Back in 2009 an idea popped in my mind on how I could be the point of change by telling my story, aspiration, projects, etc., and through many years of experiences I thought it was ideal to document, share and also form a network where all the doers could learn and inspire others, this later gave birth to Plus One Talent (1% ideas and 99% Action), Bits and Pieces personal blog and the entire Wilsen Initiative (Wi) program in 2011.

I call myself a visual communication designer with great interest in web, print, video and photography. This gives me a wider scope for learning and teaching in an interlinked field where most of the subjects learned can be applied in diverse medium. So what is the secret behind my success to learning anything new?

Here are quick tips that might help you in your pursuit! #Learning #Inside-out

  1. Plan no matter how simple it might seem, just remember sometimes things happen outside the plan. A good example; when I go out to do photography, I usually have some plan for the targeted shoots, but there comes great moments that wasn’t planned that I end up capturing as the best photo.
  2. Have a goal that will drive you to complete the assignment at hand. Ask Why? Self learning requires a lot of discipline.
  3. Read tutorials and Do it!
  4. Keep it simple (KISS = Keep It Simple and Smart).
  5. Consult an expert on quick how to but remember Google is your best friend ever.
  6. Apply continuous learning from different avenues.
  7. Do some pro-bono or paid assignments to raise your learning curve. Remember to sell something don't be afraid to be a sales person, there's a lot of learning point is selling your products.
  8. Use any appropriate tools at your disposal.
  9. Don't try to learn everything in one day or even weeks, develop a clear strategy.
  10. You will get scared with the different interfaces and what you need to learn to call yourself a pro’ but a good start is learning the tools and the simple basic techniques.
  11. Learn from the mistake don't focus on making an award winning project while learning. You can only do as much as your knowledge ends, so work on improving your knowledge base.

Below is a case in point that I applied the above eleven guiding points in making the short video featuring my son Adrian. After capturing the two videos of my son, one using the mobile phone and the other with my Nikon D5100 I went into a curious mode I asked myself what else could I do with this content in my pursuit for learning? I decided to narrow it down into two things namely;

Learning Goals:

  1. Simple editing using Adobe Premier Pro with barely zero skill.
  2. Short story UX Design, less than 1 minute.

So you too can do it, plan your learning curve and start… the rest will fall in place as you move up!

Lastly, my best two photos shot during the CMETrust event 5th December 2015.

COUNT DOWN TO 2016 - 10 MYTHS IN BUSINESS

The world is too noisy with many things that try to push us away from achieving our desired DESTINY, DREAMS, GOALS, VALUES AND PURPOSE IN LIFE.  Don’t give up and be assured from the rubbles of life CHAMPIONS EMERGE!
#StayFocus Stay focus like a high speed train on strong rails...
2016 is just around the corner and this is the time some of us make the New Year’s resolutions or plans to see us through the 364 days. I'm a big fan of systems, structures and strategy with a great insight for reflection and focus.
So what does this mean?
  • Reflection - Reflecting on how the old year has been and how many things I have accomplished. Nevertheless there's always midterm reflection and iteration to cement the goal.
  • Focus - Failures will always be there, but I'm always determined to stay on the rail and focus on what I have learned and accomplished. Every moment is a chance for learning and developing new solutions.
Here are 10 myths you need to stay away from in starting your business in 2016 and beyond.
1. Must STEAL to kick start your business.
Maybe you know or you have met people who have made it big in their business through corrupt deals; this isn't the default setting of starting a business, you can still make it with a sound savings plan and strategies before launching. There are three main things in my business diary which I call the3S in business, namely; Starting, Sustaining and Scaling up.
2. Must come from a RICH family background.
Coming from a rich family doesn't mean you have the best business ideas at your palm. You might have the required resources at your disposal but still miss the entrepreneurial character and behavior. You can still make it no matter where you come from for example through strategic partnerships and supportive networks.
3. Must start with a BIG TEAM
Starting a business doesn't require many people, by the way the fewer the better in terms of initiating the idea to the implementation stage. I would rather work with 2 to 3 people as opposed to 10 people in kick starting any idea from the grounds. This means effective and efficient decision making. Many ideas have died in the quarrel of big teams that try to have the most shares before starting the business.
4. Must be the GREATEST IDEA
Come to think of it there are many similar models in the market place and the only unique difference is in their values and strategies for implementations which include a passionate and dedicated team with admirable talents and skills. Don't spare a lot of time to be the greatest, but work around creating everlasting values in the ecosystem.
5. Must have a DEGREE
Business acumen doesn't require a degree to start a business. Many people have the knowledge and qualifications, but they lack the entrepreneurial l instincts, spirit, behavior and character to get off the grounds
6. Must make BIG profit margins at the start
You don't need to focus on big profits at the start, work on keeping the momentum and gradually grow into your desired figure
7. Must have No COMPETITION
Competition is part of the game and it’s here to stay, work on your market strategies and research on the gaps that you can fill with great influence and pride.
8. Must start with BIG Capital
Start small and target a realistic market as per your resources, There is no need of focusing on big dreams that requires millions to start but rather start with what you can reach.
9. Must quit your current occupation for example job, school etc
This depends with many factors, for example, you can still be employed while running a separate business with a partner, and the question is what type of employment? For school it depends on which level of schooling. Weigh your options before you decide and having mentors and coaches who are dedicated to see you succeed will come in handy in some situations.
10. Must not copy ideas
Copying ideas and giving them new life in your context isn't a bad thing. Stealing an idea isn't a great plan because you don't know what makes that business stand out and what invisible strategies they are using that you aren't familiar with, for example their value chain in business with a win-win approach  for example what they stand for, what they are known for and what they deliver into the market etc.

Countdown 2016, Are You Ready?

#LongLifeLearning #LearningCurve #HumanCapital #WorkForce #BeyondDegree #WorldofWork #BeyondtheClassRooms

When I was in school, we were meant to believe getting a degree is everything, this is changing with the rapid development in the world of work that leaves big gaps in the education system. There are many people who are qualified with certificates, diplomas, degrees etc, but the work force is in urgent need of special skills and admirable talents which are still not adequate and this is why some corporate and other institutions have come up with creative and innovative programs to assist anyone who wants to go beyond the education system whereby finding real value and impact in whatever they desire to do.

#CountDown2016 I hereby recommend  The DO School (http://thedoschool.org/) and The Amani Institute (http://amaniinstitute.org/) as the place to kickstart your journey #BeyondtheClassRoom. I'm a proud alumni of both entity. So what else do I need apart from my education credentials? Here is a list which you can add to... The world of work is looking for?

@MyDiary2015
1. Creative Thinkers
2. Critical Thinkers
3. Problem Solvers
4. Self Driven & Passionate
5. Talented
6. Self aware and Initiative
7. Implementors
8. Team players
9. Values
10. Life long learners

THE RISING STARS - Through My Lense

‪#‎MakingOfTheChampions‬ ‪#‎BuildingBridges‬ THE RISING STARS, we all start from somewhere!
This is a familiar scene in Kenyan street football, kids play barefoot and without any encouragement for acquiring adequate resources. I admire their determination, passion and energy to make it even big despite the situations that surrounds them.

Kenya hasn't fall short of talent since 1963 but we are in dire need of good football administrators, S3 (Systems, Structures and Strategies), dedicated soccer ambassadors, grassroot support, sponsorship and many more.

#‎IstandToBeCounted‬ Join me at www.wilsen-initiative.org to creat lasting impacts! At Wilsen we are committed to see majority of the kids in Mathare North acquire the basic facility of one ball per team and a shoe for each kid.
