Mentor-ship: Value Based Learning In Schools

Today we had a great opportunity to interact with grade 7 and 8 pupils at Mawewa primary school in Mathare North.

 Topics covered;

  1.  Innovative ways of learn.
  2. Know YOURSELF (Johari’s window and SWOT analysis).
  3. Peer pressure.
At Wilsen Initiative skill-up program we use different methodologies in delivering quality content, especially using participatory learning where both the students and the teachers are open to new learning.

We are advocates for SD4; lifelong learning and quality education whereby assist the participants towards finding new creative and innovative ways of learning either as an individual or as a team.

A stable country, not only is rich in the infrastructure, economic and political power they have but also on the great universal quality of life and the values upheld by its citizens that is passed deliberately to the next generations. Curriculum in schools is rich in good content that is focused on better performance, but we need to boost what is trained in the confines of a classroom with the ever changing dynamics in the society that impacts the future career of the pupils and generally their social economic well being.

Our goal is to help the students to experience a seamless transition from students into different levels in the society despite their learning environment. Feel free to get in touch with us for a session with your students. Our program targets both in school and out of school youth.

YOUTH EMPLOY-ABILITY

Should I get employed or be self employed?

This is one of the many questions we receive from the sessions we have conducted with youth groups at the community levels. In general being employed is neither easy nor tough it depends with many factors from your competences, education background, work culture, a company’s culture, personal experiences, etc.

On the other hand self employment isn’t a’ cup of tea’ like it is portrayed by some well established ventures. There are great opportunities in both being employed or self employed even though it majorly depends with how you make the transitions starting with how you think or even better you can still learn how to connect both scenarios to multiply your revenue streams.

The Gap: Entry Level Jobs with a focus on ICT There is a low uptake of youth entering the job market in positions that would offer a salary package or remuneration that would help them pivot to the next levels of their desired quality life. On the other hand, there's a low number of job retention or upgrade to a reasonable contract that allow entry level employees to grow, save and create a stable career pathway.

Skill- UP Program: - Solution at Wilsen Initiative (Wi)

  1. We train the youth on how to increase their values by learning extra skills.
  2. Create diverse revenue sources and how to establish meaningful partnerships and value oriented team toward self employment opportunities.
  3. How to build their desired future while still in employment venture.
  4. Establishing the right transition moments before they call it quit.
  5. How to start a saving culture, despite your income.

Note: Remember there are many untold stories of quitting a job; think about the how's, when and what next. Let us open this conversation to the next levels with your youth group to help the trainees to kick start their journey at an earlier stage. The Football Heroes from MYSA, Norway Cup 2018

It is now 19 years since I played in the Norway cup in Norway with the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA). Every year MYSA teams travel to Norway for the biggest youth football and exchange program.

As a beneficiary of the program I'm very proud to come back to the mother organization that opened many avenues for my journey both in football and education. About Norway Cup Norway Cup is the world’s largest football tournament for children and young people aged 10 to 19 years old, with 3v3 soccer for players 6-10 years old played the last weekend of the tournament. In 2016 we reached an all time high with 2199 teams participating in Norway Cup.

Around 6000 games were played over the course of the tournament in 2016. Norway Cup is organized by Bækkelagets Sportklub and it all started in 1972 with 420 teams and 8,400 participants. Source https://norwaycup.no/en/about-norway-cup/ On 18th July 2018 a team of young, talented football stars will represent MYSA / Kenya at the prestigious international tournament in Norway and later they will tour the Netherlands for football clinics and friendly matches. I was honored to be given the opportunity by the MYSA management to conduct a motivational / education session that would prepare the youth on the life changing experience oversees as an alumni of MYSA having travelled as the team captain in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

Key highlight of the Session; (Football + Education + Employability)

  1.  How to handle peer pressure.
  2. Expectations (Life before, during and after Norway).
  3. Personal branding 4. Group discussions and presentation
  4. Personal journey of alumni 6. Social, economical issues (The people, the culture, food, lifestyle etc)
The Gap: Many of the young football players lack mentors to help them through understanding life during football and life after football whereby combing education and employ-ability skills while they pursue their football talents. As a result a big number have-not been able to achieve their dream careers either because of peer pressure, adequate resource, criminal gangs, drug abuse etc.

The session was conducted under our Skill Up program hosted by Wilsen Initiative (Wi). We train youth on the 21st century skills that would eventually help build a positive brand, choose career pathways and also give back to their community. We advocate for long life learning and quality education, footballer are no exceptions, everyone needs to continue learning to improve their lives and tackle emerging challenges.

New Uniform - Mathare North Rangers F.C

It is a great pleasure to connect our team with resources that will help them through achieving their dreams. At the grassroots, not many teams can afford quality footballs, football shoes, first aid kits, etc. through Wilsen Initiative under football for hope program, we have been mobilizing for football kits and materials either new or used to support community grassroots team from 12 year to 16 years.

We thank Raphael Obonyoael and Obonyo foundation for recognizing our efforts at the grassroots whereby they donated a set of uniform and football to our team Mathare North Rangers F.c under their ongoing campaign that they are running that supports leadership through sports.

We welcome all well wishers to come and join us in mobilizing for the most needed resources for deserving talents and teams. You can also donate a ball, football shoes or any material you can afford. Step by step we shall nurture future football stars with admirable values for leadership.
