Football Life Cycle In Kenya

+throughMylens the untold football ⚽ stories The Genesis - The Next Generation Star ⭐ #grassrootfootballdeveploment⚽

The Dark Tunnel šŸŒ‘

Despite the many challenges young people face from lack of equipment, lack of football pitch, proper facilities etc Many are still motivated to make a career in football unaware of the 'dark tunnel'

    2012..

Here is my summary of the life cycle in football especially with a lens from the underserved communities.

~ 9yrs - 12 yrs - Aspire to play more and become the next star. Life seems very easy even though many can't access the basic resources to support their football journey.

~ 14yrs - 18 yrs - In school, no responsibility attached related to family. They have time to play and there's an option to build a career in football but they don't know how neither is the system clear on how to develop as a professional footballer.

-18 yrs - 30 years - Many are seen quitting the football scene because of many reasons for example more family responsibility, early marriage, limited to zero earnings playing football, frustration, injury, lack of sustainable structures to consider football as a career, peer pressure etc Many great talents are lost at this stage.

-30+ years - Many are seen joining football competitions that are  based more on fun, legends, tournaments etc.Their passion to play is reignited because they don't depend on football to pay their bills. Football at this stage is a tribe of social experiences and not a career.

Ze Odero's - Family Love

Life Series - +throughMylens - Ze- Odero's

Happy festive season šŸŽˆ #FamilyLove.

If given the option to select a different family, I would always choose my own. I appreciate your support during the year 2023 and I'm looking forward to Do MORE in 2024.

The significance of family and the necessity of sticking with, loving, and caring for one another through life's ups and downs is among the finest lessons my late parents ever gave us.

I Love My Family So Much

To be a part of a family like mine
is so divine
where love is shown
hurt is shared
our love for each other is never impaired

we talk
we laugh
we cry
but we are a family
and we do it all together
for as a family
we do it all as one
you hurt one
you hurt all
and as a family unit
we will all stand tall
for we are family
a family full of strength
a family full of love
a family no one can touch
that’s why I love my family so much.

šŸ’” šŸ’” One of the hardest and painful feelings is losing someone during the holidays. My cousin Owaga passed away last week, and I learned yesterday that a close friend of mine (Siro) lost his daughter Nicole under mysterious circumstances.

May God provide courage to all those experiencing grief this holiday season. There's always a purpose for everything, therefore may you never give up on yourself. Rest in Peace, Nicole and Owaga.

Springboard into 2024 and beyond.

Life Series +throughMylens Bits and Pieces

#SelfMade

"Spend a few minutes thinking back on the past, and then devote over an hour to creating an action plan that will help you envision the ideal future.  " - Wilson Masaka, Youth Advocate and Social Entrepreneur

My journey in 2023...

I wish to go deeply into my experience, particularly the year 2023 as a freelancer in Nairobi City. I had no assignments to begin the year in January 2023, and I had no idea how I would get by. I had a lot of ideas to go upcountry and try my luck, but the practicalities of life prevented me from making the abrupt move.

Looking back, I'm proud of everything I've accomplished for my family, myself, and the community at large. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped me along the way this year in any way; you have given me hope that I can still make a difference and follow my dreams.

In 2024, I hope to take on even more challenges and take advantage of even more possibilities to accomplish more. I also hope to start something upcountry, because home, whether it be east or west, will always be the best.

I'm a City Boy - Upcountry is Calling

Life Series +throughMylens Bits and Pieces, a deep dive of my journey towards achieving my dream.

With the current difficult economic climate, I hope that my article will serve as an inspiration to many, particularly young people who are unemployed and considering moving upcountry.

I'm a City Boy #SelfMade.

During a recent talk about life in general, I spoke with a close relative. Rather than providing advice on how to get by in the challenging city life, he quickly suggested moving upcountry. Let me tell you, migrating upcountry during a difficult economic period has always been discussed by many families as an option.

If you're a young person, you should always consider your possibilities locally and rearrange your schedule to fit your personal lifestyle that you can afford and that makes you happy rather than doing things just to impress people.

However, anyone who suggests to you to move upcountry as a solution to your unemployment is not well-wishing you well, especially if they are aware that you have nothing there and have lived in the city your entire life.

Think twice before you take a jump into that decision of leaving the city life especially if you are youth.  Although I am aware that city life can be more difficult than rural life, if you are a young person born in the city and decide to retire early to upcountry due to unemployment or financial difficulties, this could be one of your worst decisions.

Unless you have family inheritance, a side project, or an investment that will allow you to support yourself while you adjust to your new lifestyle upcountry.

I reiterate that the majority of young people face pressure in their lives to find employment, even if it means working for low pay.  It wouldn't be a bad idea to relocate upcountry and start over, but in order to make it happen, you will need to adopt a more deliberate and strategic approach.

These are five areas you can think about. While they may differ depending on the location, these are generally significant things to consider.

1. There are fewer job options the further you live away from cities and towns.

2. Upcountry might suit you unless you plan to offer a solution for a good or service as a self-employed individual.

3. Plan ahead and visit often to gain an understanding of the ecology. Use the additional lenses you typically bring with you while visiting a new location.

4.  Your professional network becomes more limited as soon as you relocate upcountry, to the point where you are only connected to individuals who are unlikely to help you.

5. Wider networks are available in cities as long as you add value. Hope is inspired by the diversity, opportunities, and apparent progress. This approach might as well be a dead end if you don't also possess discipline, an open mind, and the ability to generate value.

That's all I have for now. If you'd want to learn more, schedule a session with me to discuss more with your youth group on creating goals for the upcoming year and reviewing the one that just passed.

"You cannot get at your destination if you do not make the voyage. Keep in mind that an absence of a plan is still a plan, but it is improbable that you will accomplish your goals." - Wilson Masaka, Youth Advocate and Social Entrepreneur.

The Path to Sustainable Football: How to Achieve a More Sustainable Model.

It takes more than simply a stable financial foundation for a grassroots football team to succeed and endure for over ten years.

Money is important, but it's not the sole factor that matters most when it comes to sustainability. The team may disintegrate or struggle to continue pursuing its vision if they make money as the core or sole thing that binds the team together.

Many outstanding teams have collapsed in my experience, all because of winnings from competitions or money received as part of sponsorship agreements.

Let me clarify: I am aware that a team needs resources and financial assistance in order to thrive, but if these things are not managed effectively, they could really work against the team.

In addition to whatever financial awards they may earn, each team needs to add this additional component.

1. Team structure :- Governance, leadership, responsibility, accountability, financial accounting etc.

2. Team culture :- The philosophy, the brand, the value, aspirations, documentation etc).

3. Sustainability plan :- Fundraising, investment, friends-raising, players transition, management transition etc.

4. The mission and vision

5. Partnership and communication strategy.

6. Players and official welfare.

Point Of View

" Building strong pillars of sustainability, systems, structure, culture, responsibility, system of rewards, and accountability can help you succeed at every stage of your journey, money or no money. This can be done even in the absence of a secure financial foundation." - Wilson Masaka, Youth Advocate and Social Entrepreneur

Football  'Made Me' I'm inspired to Do More... and in 2024 I hope to work with more local football teams to help them raise resources, create long-term organizational structures, and increase brand awareness. Meeting with the football teams from Cusson PZ and Mathare North Youth was an incredible honor.

Football is My Lifestyle, ICT is My Career and Empowering Young People is My Calling.

Founder 360 Bits and Pieces

šŸ“ Notice

I frequently receive requests from young people who want to work with me on the Wilsen Initiative (Wi) mission because they perceive my accomplishments through a different lens and are unaware of the struggles I have to make it happen, particularly when it comes to mobilizing resources and making support calls.

I frequently share more of my victories and joyous moments of accomplishment than I do rejections, setbacks, missed calls, etc.

Quote

"Few people will remain with you when you're losing, but everyone will adore you when you're winning." - Wilson Masaka,. Youth Advocate and Social Entrepreneur.

It's important for founders to realize that when they witness successful moments, many individuals will be more inclined to join the cause than when they witness failures.

Here are some pointers before recruiting anyone to join your cause:

1. Find out why they are motivated to join the cause.

2. Would they provide resources to the project? Time, money, equipment, etc. are a few examples.

3. How and why would they like to contribute to the initiative?

4. What special aptitude, skill, or ability are they bringing to the table?

5. How do they view the project and themselves in a year?

6. What are they currently doing?

7. Do they follow you on social media platforms?

8. Ask them to explain the initiative in terms of their own comprehension.

9. Give them unpaid task to do with deadline attached to it..

Only a select number would choose to join your cause for reasons other than financial gain; the majority would only want to join you for financial gain.

Never begin an explanation of your accomplishments if you want to draw people into your cause. Instead, begin by outlining your background, current situation, and desired future state. Inquire of the person in the story what they would do differently to further advance both the initiative and themselves.

In future I would want to employ a number of youth into the initiative but currently I still don't have the financial muscle and all I do is dependent on my own efforts as well as those of my friends, family, and well-wishers.

In Your Own Shoes - Personal Journey

 Life Series

In Your Own Shoes.

+throughMylens Bits and Pieces

'Je Niongeze volume?' catch with me for master class series +throughMylens Self Made and World of work Master Classes.

šŸŽÆ Training and Facilitation

I aim to learn more from the participants in order to improve our experiences in various areas of life, and I bring more than ten years of experience and knowledge to the session.

The Master Key šŸ—️

" One of the  key to success is unquestionably education, but without windows of opportunity or a door to knock on, it's worthless." - Wilson Masaka Youth Advocate and Social Entrepreneur

The questions I seek to address....

- How to embrace lifelong learning (Self paced learning).

- How to exploit our talents and skills.

- How to utilise the acquired education and become more.

- How to learn to learn (Learn To Learn)

Here are a few of my viewpoints as the year draws to a close.

Mental Strength and Focus

~ "Many young people are unaware that learning occurs more readily when things are challenging because it forces us to stretch mentally and put in more effort to persevere and solve problems." - Wilson Masaka, Youth Advocate and Social Entrepreneur.

Press F3 (Fail First and Forward)

- "I'd prefer to learn from my own mistakes and failures than to take solace in the comforting experiences of others in the hopes that one day lady luck will be on my side." - Wilson Masaka Youth Advocate and Social Entrepreneur.

Brand that is Called You

"Not everything can be copied and pasted. Though you can't be someone else, you can still improve your life by learning from everyone." - Wilson Masaka, Youth Advocate and Social Entrepreneur.

School Holiday Activities at Wilsen Initiative (Wi) - Plus One Talent ~ Football Boots To Skates ~

We held a skating clinic for the junior squad of the Mathare North Rangers on 1st December 2023.

The primary aim was to create a platform to acquire knowledge from an alternative setting than their normal routine playing football in Mathare North. Observing how the players adopted crucial steps or techniques that the trainer had explained was enjoyable and encouraging that anything can be learned thus our philosophy of Plus One Talent.

We have also registered the  team to the forthcoming  Manuar Tournament in Babadogo which the team will play different teams from other neighborhood away from home.

Below are the key lessons learned during the skating session, which was first for most of the players who were initially terrified of falling but later realized they could do it and enjoy themselves;

1. Challenging our comfort zones.
2. Learning the basics.
3. Self awareness
4. Individual brilliance.
5. Self pace learning
6. Confidence

Our goal is to provide unique opportunities for underprivileged youth and children to discover their full potential in unfamiliar and unexplored territories.

" The boys were able to play against a great team like the Kariobangi Sharks, which is a unique opportunity and experience. A few things to take away from the match are for example playing as a team, individual brilliance, the system  of play, and decision-making etc.

Now that we have the chance to reflect on the outcome of the match, let use all go back to our teams and implement what we picked especially at an individual level." - Wilson Masaka, founder Mathare North Combined.

Wilsen Initiative (Wi) School Holiday Activities. IaM a sHERO - She Can, Skill Up Master Session.

On Wednesday, November 29 we had the honor of conducting a Skill Up Master session at the Mwiki Kasarani-based Bright Future Starlets.

Highlights of the Session

Esther Mazira, co-founder of She Can and IaM a sHERO, talked about her experiences in football and schooling. Her advice on building powerful personal brands based on aptitude, attitude, character, and life experiences was both inspirational and practical.

I spoke about peer pressure and how to build a solid team around values using the balloon analogy.

Through IaM as a sHERO, She Can program we are in a mission to mentor, share, upskill and learn more from young girls who are the at stage of their career development and personal development.

We strive to bring the best learning experiences which would open more avenues of teamwork, critical thinking, self awareness, lifelong learning etc. Using our stories and tapping into participants journeys we create safe spaces for dialogue with an aim of becoming even better and focused with the future while learning from the past.

Are You Ready? Are You Girls / Women Team based in Nairobi? We have a free session for you. Get in touch while the offer still stands.

We have one more session to go as per our calendar schedule while on the other hand we continue to mobilize resources for Mathare North Festive Season Football Tournament for Girls Teams.
