Success or Failure of Any Organization Starts At the Board

#StartUP #BoardMembers #BigQuestion #Governance #Leadership #OrganisafionCulture

Matters leadership, human resource financial administration and governance are all dear to me. I love expanding my knowledge not only in matters ICT, Sports, Youth, Management and Entrepreneurship but also more importantly leadership, human resource and governance are all within the sphere of my personal development.

Come to think of it one of the success or failure of any organization starts at the board level who inspires a set of culture and provide directions to which will allows the organisation achieve its strategic plan and arrived at a desired vision.

Here are ten questions you should ask yourself either you are start up NGO or established organization.

  1. How are the board members elected, selected or constituted?
  2. Should the board members be part of your fundraising team.
  3. Should they also commit to some amount contributed to the organization?
  4. How long should a board member serve?
  5. What is their passion and motivation?
  6. What is their background?
  7. How is decision making at the board level?
  8. How do they related with the management team and other levels of the organization?
  9. How is their relationship with the founding team?
  10. How often should the board be trained? And are the policies that guides the boards operations?

Reshaping the Board’s Role in Organisational Culture

Culture is a crucial driver of any organisation's success and a critical lever in its performance. It shapes and influences an organisation’s internal environment, as well as its interactions with and success in the external environment. In an organisation, culture is the way people behave, what they believe, and the values they hold – on the whole generally without thinking about any of it.

These behaviours, beliefs and values are passed through the organisation via communication and imitation, from one employee, volunteer or even director to the next. Get culture right and it can drive innovation and growth, promote ethical behaviour, increase customer satisfaction and create strong employee engagement. In essence, culture builds and makes it easy to maintain a healthy and strong organisation that can flourish – as the saying goes “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”. But get culture wrong and it can destroy organisational performance, kill employee engagement, provoke customers to leave in droves and worst of all cause key strategic initiatives to stall, fall short or outright fail. In time, a culture that is allowed to become toxic will cause an organisation to wither and eventually die.

Know Your Friends, Are you in a Thinkers or Spenders Circles?

I'm pensively reflecting on my next goals for 2019 and how I have performed in 2018. Part of our success and failures are attributed by the friends we keep. We must change our conversation as young people if we want a good place in the future we desire. We are made of our own thinking, and imagination, and friends contribute a significant percentage in our journey.

#Quote “Creative thinking inspires ideas. Ideas inspire change.” Barbara Januszkiewicz

Despite youth being one of the marginalized groups in many spheres of life (social, economic and political), we have a part to blame ourselves in the attitude, action and conversions we keep that I believe also contributes to the already widening gaps.

The friends we keep may also determine how far and fast you can achieve your dreams, vision and action plan.

Below are two types of friends, according to my diary namely;
  1. The spenders (Now mentality and egocentric).
  2. The thinkers (Visionary, team and future).
The spenders (Now mentality and egocentric). - Instant gratification, OK with the status quo, thinks self, no share and don't care mentality. Let me dive in on some of the triggers around the conversations I come across as in my neighborhood (Eastlands, Nairobi) or when I visit the villages; 1 out of 10 will all be about ideas the rest will be give me something (handout culture) and not around what can we do together conversation.
  1. Nitolee form -  Get me in 'form'

  2. Niachie za macho - Give me something small.
  3. Unatuacha aje? - how do you leave us?

  4. Nitolee katiku - Give me something

  5. Umetutupa? - You have abandoned us!

  6. Leo kanashika wapi? - Today where is the party going?
  7. Nitafutie kazi – Find for me a job?
The Thinkers (Visionary, team and future). - Thoughtful, cares, insightful, share idea and questions the status quo. The rare situation you will come across young people not looking at what is at their disposal to make a significant change in their life and that of others. Think about time, skills, network, talent, experiences, personal story etc. This is the type of conversation I would expect from this group;
  1. Niko na idea - I have an idea
...
  2. Tunaweza fanya nini kuboresha maisha yetu – What can we do to make our life better?
  3. I like what you do, how can I be of help or how can I join you?

  4. When is the next learning expedition we are going to take?

  5. When is the next networking event to attend together?
  6. I'm looking for opportunity for job creation and partnership?
  7. I have X if we pull together we can create Y? (thinks skills, experience, funds, time etc.)
Unless we change our conversation, streamline our curriculum to the philosophy of the thinkers and not of the spenders many youth in Kenya and the African continent at large will continue to complain while they live in abject poverty and confusion in resource constrained society.

#FinancialTip To achieve stable financial freedom one needs 20% information / knowledge and 80% behaviour.
We are made of our own thinking, doing, undoing and imagination. Friends have some influence in the patterns that we keep ( Habit, Character, Behaviour etc).

#Note My view shouldn't be applied generally, but it is a conversation looking at how we relate with our peer groups, especially at the community levels either in creating new opportunities, positive causes, challenge etc. I advocate for quality conversation which means being strategic, empathetic and social in achieving sustainable progress in our personal journeys through our networks, as Porter Gale said your network is your net-worth. Read more about decent conversation

Decent Conversations, Great Ideas!

The year has got 365 days and every day might look different due to the activities we are engaged in but some things will stay the same all through the year like the sun rising from the East and settling in the West. As the days go by, you will meet people of all walks of life, with different values, interest, peer group, older generation, rich, poor etc.

Opportunities will be manifested in the conversations you will be engaged in that will either evoke new thinking, create opportunities for the next innovation, self reflection, partnerships, life transition etc. In this era of technology you will also be overwhelmed with different cross cutting conversations on the social media networks within every second or minute to either share, like, tag, read, watch or comment (text, video, images and audio).

Lectures at CMETrust in Mathare ( Youth Space)

All this will compete for your attention and influence the way you think and act on a particular aspect of your life or the subject.

 Self Evaluation Around Conversations

Let me take a pause and reflect on 2018, think about these ten questions around conversation;
  1. How many conversations did you trigger that led to an idea or action?
  2. How many 'useless' conversations were you engaged in that didn't lead to anything progressive?
  3. How many meetings were you invited to? (round table meetings, workshops, conference etc).
  4. How many meetings did you organize to discuss an idea or meet the ideal prospective partner or mentor?
  5. How many social meet-ups did you attend (Weddings, Parties, Meet and Greet)?
  6. Who was in attendance during the meet-up or meeting?
  7. How many follow-ups were organized after the first meeting?
  8. Are there traces of success stories, follow ups, projects or pilot project triggered by the conversation you started?
  9. How many e-conversations were you involved in? Think of email, SMS, telephone calls, social media, hangouts, Voice over Internet etc.
  10. What were the challenges, success or opportunities through the use of either e-conversation or meet-up in person?
Diary 2018 – Story Telling and Conversation

" Naturally, we are social being and we are meant to live together not in isolation since the time of creation. No matter any challenges one might face there are still ways to strike a conversation for better understanding, partnerships, ideation, cohesion, etc.”  Wilson Masaka, founder Wilsen Initiative  (Wi)

Everyone has a story to tell!

Open your mouth to tell a story,
Open your mind to many other possibilities,
Open your heart to help others tell their story
and Open your eyes for new opportunities for connections in our stories

I have learned that the people that I meet in my life either online or offline will always influence the next pathways of my journey through the conversation we make that might trigger shared synergies for new ideas and sustainable impact.

Never underrated any conversation be an active listener and participate in unearthing new opportunities that might never openly present itself. Take a good example, it is interesting to talk about the weather patterns which will be there everyday, but on the flip, you can also re-frame the conversation by also thinking of how our actions contributes to the weather patterns and try to do something about it and this will be around global warming which is real.

Let us all, think of ourselves as solutions to existing and emerging problems in the society. Within the 17 SDGs my energy is around poverty eradication and quality education for all. It doesn't mean I don't support the rest, but I primarily try to add my contribution and voice toward the goals even in a small way despite my position in the society.

What's your main goal/s in 2019?

The 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to transform our world:

  • GOAL 1: No Poverty
  • GOAL 2: Zero Hunger
  • GOAL 3: Good Health and Well-being
  • GOAL 4: Quality Education
  • GOAL 5: Gender Equality
  • GOAL 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
  • GOAL 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
  • GOAL 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • GOAL 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • GOAL 10: Reduced Inequality
  • GOAL 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
  • GOAL 13: Climate Action
  • GOAL 14: Life Below Water
  • GOAL 15: Life on Land
  • GOAL 16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions
  • GOAL 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal
