The Cornerstone of a Great Leader

As a youth trainer and facilitator, I teach topics such as leadership, creative entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and photography. In one of the sessions at a primary school, I asked the students to give me examples of leaders they knew; to my astonishment, their parents were not listed, but politicians were, implying that our concept of a leader is somehow limited within certain arena.

Where Can We Find Inspiration for a Great Leader?

Our perspective of a great leader is primarily influenced by what we read, what we learn in school, what we see on television, and other related media. In my perspective, the political environment in Kenya has had a significant impact on molding the leadership agenda and narrative, leaving other sectors with little to inspire the next generation of leaders.

It is important to share more powerful stories outside of the political sphere about what great leadership entails, since this will usher in new goals and a culture around leaders. 

Financial literacy and leadership, which have an impact on many aspects of our lives, are two issues that I believe are underrepresented in schools. In general, why do so many people have outstanding school qualifications but lack economics and leadership skills?

The Dark Tunnel of Kenyan Football - Club Funding

The Kenyan football structure is based on seven levels of league, namely: Sub-County, County, Regional, Division 2, Division 1, National Super League (NSL), and Kenya Premier League. 

Many teams underestimate the value of creating a long-term financial vehicle for the league. While it is evident that some top-level clubs are struggling to remain financially viable, this should serve as a wake-up call for all lower-league clubs to consider inventive ways to survive at their current level and in the future.

In current financially limited era, few firms are ready to go farther financially to support a club in the name of marketing because there are many other possibilities and they can get more value.

The mind-boggling questions: ❓ ❓ 

  1. How much does a football club in Kenya need to operate successfully (Sub-County, County, Regional, Division 2, Division 1, NSL and KPL)? 

  2. How much do they get in return, especially when they win the league (Sub-County, County, Regional, Division 2, Division 1, NSL and KPL)? 

   Note; I am aware that expenditures vary depending on league level and other considerations.

I'm writing to prepare numerous grassroots teams that are about to collapse owing to a lack of funds. Perhaps by planning ahead of time and understanding what to expect, they will be able to begin their financial sustainability plan as early as feasible.

Let me warn you that relying solely on politicians or individuals to fund your teams is not a sustainable strategy, and corporate sponsorship is also shifting as a result of the economic downturn. Let me use the regional league as an example. Did you know that a team based in Nairobi requires roughly 250,000+ to compete in a Regional league per season?

This figure may surprise you at first glance, but if you create a thorough budget for all of your ad-hoc spending over a season, it will become clear. 

To summarize, the top priority of any aspiring football president in the forthcoming election should be to create a sustainable business football model from which all stakeholders can benefit and to help nurture new talent towards a professional career in football as players, coaches, team doctors, referees, and so on.

Football For Hope

Football has shaped who I am today, in addition to my education. My goal of playing professional football faded many years ago, but my desire to assist young people in having a more meaningful and successful experience continues to grow. I wish to share my experiences and assist the youth in developing a workable formula within the present system and framework.

One piece of advise for all young football players: your gift or talent has an invisible expiration date. Know when you're in your prime and make a strategic move. On the side, pursue another vocation, become an expert, and learn something new every day.

Football For Hope

My dream goal is to connect each child in Mathare North with a football shoe and a ball; aside from my education, football has shaped who I am today.

As a child, I played football barefoot, so I understand what it's like to have a great desire to play for professional local and international clubs but without the required support and equipment. Unfortunately, some of the difficult situations I've had over the previous 30 years are common among children and youth aspiring to reach their goals, particularly in rural and urban informal settings.

At the Wilsen Initiative (Wi), one of our goals is to teach young people on and off the field skills that will enable them live a more responsible lifestyle and, if feasible, create a professional career. All of this cannot be accomplished if we do not have appropriate resources to help children and youth play safely and with dignity.

CALL FOR SUPPORT

You can join me on this lifelong adventure to assist young football talent and their teams acquire the necessary resources for the game.

Below is a list of items needed for grassroots teams and players; you can donate new or used equipment for young children aged U10 to U15.

~ Football boots / shoes.
~ Football ⚽ balls
~Uniforms
~ Training bibs / vest
~ Training Cons.
~ Tracksuits
Etc.

Other support required;

~ Training hours - Professional Football Training Clinics.
~ Facilitate outdoor trips for the team (exposure visits and friendly matches).
~ Join in Resource Mobilization (time and expertise).
