Training Programme: Boot Camp — Life Skills Beyond School

By Wilsen Initiative (Wi)

The Brand Called YOU

Who are you?

Not just your name.

Not just the school you attend.

Not just the career you hope to pursue.

Not just the job you may eventually get.

Who are YOU becoming?

This is where the I AM_ Self Made Series begins.

The programme is an initiative of Wilsen Initiative (Wi) designed to create conversations around the things young people need to navigate life beyond the classroom.

School gives us knowledge, but life also demands self-awareness, curiosity, confidence, adaptability, communication, creativity, problem-solving, decision-making and the courage to take action.

The world needs young people who are not only prepared to become employees and consumers, but also actors, creators, innovators, entrepreneurs, problem-solvers and changemakers.

And we believe the journey starts with one important discovery:

YOU.

Before you decide what you want to become, take time to understand who you are.

What are your interests?

What are your strengths?

What makes you curious?

What problems do you care about?

What values guide you?

What skills are you developing?

What kind of future do you want to create?

These questions form the foundation of our Self-Made philosophy.

Our Mission

We seek to complement what young people learn in school by creating a safe and practical space to explore life beyond the four walls of the classroom.

We don't claim to have all the answers.

Actually, we believe nobody does.

Instead, we create conversations, share experiences, ask questions and provide practical nuggets that can help young people discover their own pathways.

Our goal is not simply to give young people more choices.

It is to help them develop career and life awareness so they can understand themselves, recognise opportunities, make informed choices and intentionally work towards their personal vision.

The Brand Called YOU

The overarching idea behind the boot camp is simple:

YOU are a brand.

Your character.

Your skills.

Your experiences.

Your values.

Your creativity.

Your reputation.

Your story.

Your ability to learn, adapt and create value.

Your personal brand is not something you simply design.

It is something you build.

And like every meaningful journey, it starts with self-discovery.

Founder 360° — Wilson Masaka

«“As Wilsen Initiative, we don't necessarily have all the answers to your journey. But we have the nuggets to Inspire, Connect and Educate young people to discover their ideal pathways and find answers through their own stories, with themselves as the drivers of their journey.”»

This philosophy is closely connected to the wider Wilsen Initiative vision of inspiring young people to use their talents and skills to create positive change.

The Bigger Picture

At Wilsen Initiative, we believe young people don't only need to be told what careers exist.

They need opportunities to understand themselves, the world around them and how they can create their own pathways.

Because the future shouldn't only be something young people wait for.

They can participate in creating it.

Do More. Be More. Be Different.

Training Programme: Boot Camp — Life Skills Beyond School
By Wilsen Initiative (Wi)

The Brand Called YOU.

Yesterday, we had a great session at Wale Wale, Kibera, for the I AM_ Self Made Series — One-Day Training.

It was a day of conversations, reflection, learning and discovery.

We explored some of the questions that don't always have simple answers:

Who am I?
What do I have?
What can I learn?
What can I create?
Where do I want to go?
What must I do to get there?

These are not questions with one-size-fits-all answers.

They are the beginning of a journey.

Here are some picture highlights from the session.

Who Is It For?

The programme is designed for teens and young people aged 13–35 years, with sessions adapted to the age, context and needs of participants.

It is particularly suited for schools, youth groups, community organisations, football academies, CBOs, NGOs and other youth-focused spaces.

Career Pathway

 #YouthSpace

The question is simple: Which way?

Yet, defining or designing a career pathway is one of the toughest decisions many young people face especially those growing up in underserved communities.

For many, life itself is already a struggle. From raising school fees to staying in school throughout the academic calendar, some learners are frequently sent home because of fee balances. In such circumstances, hope becomes a powerful currency the belief that one day things will get better.

At school, teachers often ask the familiar question: “What do you want to become when you grow up?”

It sounds like a simple question, but the answer isn't always that simple.

Sometimes, what the heart desires doesn't connect with the reality around us. Even when a young person performs well academically, there are still questions about opportunities, finances, access and whether the chosen career will eventually provide a sustainable livelihood. And for those who don't perform well in examinations, the situation can feel even more uncertain.

On the flip side, choosing a career pathway can appear much easier when life provides room to explore, experiment, fail, learn and try again. But for many young people, career decisions are made under pressure, with limited information and very little room for trial and error.

I believe many young people are confronted by three competing choices when thinking about their careers:

1. What your parents want.

2. What you want.

3. What the market needs.

From my own journey and from witnessing the struggles many young people go through after school I believe what your parents want should not be the sole determinant of your career pathway.

Yes, parents invest heavily in their children's education. They sacrifice, pay school fees and want the best for their children. But that investment should not become a contract that dictates an entire lifetime.

Parents should guide, advise and expose their children to possibilities without necessarily deciding their destination.

For me, the better question is:

What do you want to do, and how can you align that passion with what the market needs?

We live in a rapidly changing world where technology continues to reshape careers, businesses and the way we work. Some jobs that were common yesterday are changing, while new opportunities are emerging that previous generations could never have imagined.

Therefore, young people need more than career choices. They need career awareness.

They need to understand themselves, discover their strengths, explore different industries, develop relevant skills and continuously learn.

Your career pathway doesn't have to be a straight line.

You can change direction.

You can learn something new.

You can start again.

You can combine your passion with a marketable skill.

The goal is not simply to choose a career. The goal is to design a pathway that connects who you are, what you love, what you can become good at, and what the world needs.

Perhaps the most important career question isn't “What do you want to be?”

It is:

“What problem do you want to solve, and what skills do you need to solve it?”

Do More. Be More. Be Different.

Self Made Series

Driven by a passion for sustainable impact, I continue to create a ripple effect of positive change in the lives and spaces of young people.

Through mentorship, practical learning, and community engagement, I equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and mindset they need to build sustainable business models, embrace emerging technologies not just as consumers but as creators, and turn their passions, skills, and available resources into meaningful livelihoods.

I believe sustainable change begins when young people are given the opportunity to learn, create, connect, and take ownership of their future.

My work is therefore not just about inspiring young people. It is about helping them identify possibilities, develop practical skills, create opportunities, and use what they have to make a difference in their own lives and communities.

12th AUGUST | HAPPY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY

12th AUGUST | HAPPY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY šŸŒ⚽

Main Theme for 2026: “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”

Yesterday, I had the honour of joining five football teams/academies, with over 500 participants in attendance, for a one-day tournament held at Mbotela Canon Tuff Grounds and St. Paul’s Primary School in Makongeni, Nairobi Ward.

The tournament was hosted by Halisi Sports Services, and it was a pleasure to be part of the photography team, capturing the energy, talent and spirit of young people through my lens. šŸ“ø⚽

On the flip side, it was also a perfect opportunity to share my photography skills with my daughter Debbie and Adriano as part of their ongoing learning journey.

My Photography Journey

+throughMylens šŸ“ø | Every Element Carries More Than A Story

I AM ___
#SelfMadeSeries

I am a self-taught photographer. My journey began in 2009 during a work-related mission in Zanzibar. What started as curiosity has grown into a lifelong mission: using photography, storytelling, and lived experiences to inspire change.

Every day presents a new opportunity to learn. One of my favorite taglines is:

"Posting ndio bure, picha unalipia." #SemiZaMaja

There is no such thing as a free photograph. Creating a powerful image takes far more than simply pressing the shutter button. It requires patience, creativity, timing, and intention.

Behind the Scenes

šŸ“ Observe, anticipate, relate, and be fully present.
šŸ“ Take hundreds of photographs.
šŸ“ Carefully select the strongest images.
šŸ“ Edit with purpose.
šŸ“ Learn from every assignment.
šŸ“ Deliver your best work.

Photography is more than an image—it's a perspective on life.

Quotes

"You have a gift to change things for the better if you can see possibilities where others see limitations."
— Wilson Masaka, Youth Advocate & Social Entrepreneur

"My best photograph is the one I have yet to create. I measure my craft not by the number of pictures I take, but by the depth of the moments I am able to capture."
— Wilson Masaka | +throughMylens

"The greatest creative challenge isn't finding a new place; it's discovering a new story in the same place. Every week, month, and year may bring the same activity, but a different lens reveals a different perspective."
