Book Launch : Turning Point Magazine

 A Wonderful Evening Indeed!

Yesterday I attended the inaugural launch of the Turning Point Magazine at Nairobi Safari Club (Lilian Towers), Nairobi, Kenya.

Turning Point magazine, a pioneering platform dedicated to amplifying grassroots voices, sharing success stories, and inspiring meaningful change across Africa and beyond. Turning Point magazine represents a collective effort by professionals across various sectors to bridge the gap in storytelling for social change. Rooted in Kenya but with a vision that extends to

the African region and international spheres, the magazine serves as a resource for empowering stakeholders with practical insights and innovative ideas.

I'm happy to have been featured in the magazine and looking forward to the next edition.

Congratulations šŸ‘ šŸŽ‰ and all the best; this is indeed a milestone as you focus forward.

Called To Serve As an Interviewer.

I've had the opportunity to interview and be interviewed on a number of times, which has given me a great deal of experience.

I was honoured to be invited to participate in a two-day interview process by the Canada Mathare Education Trust (CMETrust) to award educational scholarships to deserving Mathare Valley youth from low-income households who are top performers in school and are dedicated to giving back to their community.

My overall impression is that a large number of Mathare's bright young people ('A' type students) are in dire need of assistance. A substantial portion of the young people are dedicated and focused on making it happen for themselves, their families, and the community, even though they come from an underprivileged neighbourhood. Mothers support a sizable portion of households, who earn a fluctuating income from menial jobs.

One question you will never miss in any interview is, tell us about yourself. This question may sound simple, but it needs a deep understanding of context. In many cases, it finds many off guard whenever I conduct interviews. The question I want to ask you today is: How well do you know yourself?

I wish every applicant academic success and encourage them to never give up in the event that they are not selected for one of the few available scholarship spots.

THE 2ND Edition Of The Annual IaM a sHERO

Football Competition and Skill Up Session.

This year we will have the 2nd Edition of the I AM a sHERO—She Can Football Competition and Skill Up Session (Life Skills) on 12th December 2024. Currently I'm reaching out to friends and well-wishers for support to make the event successful. You can donate sanitary pads, football, time, refreshment, uniforms, etc.

#POV The Change Maker Journey

It is one thing to be passionate, but it is quite another to have the resources necessary to carry out your objective and meet new obstacles. Overall, even if it takes years to realize your goal, you will never give up if you know and understand your WHY. #LegacyVision

As the co-founder of the IaM a sHERO-She Can program, I am currently in the position described, but I am determined to make it again for the U13 girls teams by hosting the annual IaM a sHERO Football Competition and Skill Up session (Lifeskills) on December 12, 2024.

Due to resource constraints, the event will be an invite-only one that will feature only four girls teams with a total of 60 players.

šŸ“Œ Call For Support We Can Do It Again, Even Better Than Last Edition.

I'm requesting my friends and well wishers to join me in supporting the forthcoming event on 12th December. So far we have 30% of the requirements for the event, and I'm hoping that we will have closed the 70% gap by 1st December.

Get in touch for any support. See the attached poster for more details. Inbox me for the next steps or email wilson.masaka@gmail.com.

School Holiday Exchange Program

The Wi - Experience, the 'East Meets the West'.

On Saturday, November 16th, I was invited by Malezi Mema Soccer Academy, based in Kiambu County, to join their U13 and U15 teams in their routine gym session. This was a great privilege, and I don't recall the last time I went to a gym of this calibre; indeed, this was a once-in-a-lifetime event for me, which made me think of how we can also create such experiences for the child in underserved communities.

After the gym  session I led the skill-up master session on life skills. My lesson focused on critical and creative thinking, as well as how the kids may integrate learning with football.

I'm looking forward to the next session (experience) whereby we will have our team from Mathare North visit the facility, play football, and have a skill-up session at the location, which is something I know will be an eye opener and inspiration for them to see life from the other lane. We will also organise a return experience whereby the kids from the West will visit Eastlands.

Safeguarding Children During Lengthy School Holidays.

 Parental Guidance 101 #Parenthhood #ParentGood

Safeguarding Children During Lengthy School Holidays: ( October 2024 - Jan 2025).

" Spend meaningful time with your kids so they can acquire the values and skills that society and education cannot provide. When you do this, your kids will be on your side no matter what and won't ever flee when you need them most." - Wilson Masaka

As of yet, there isn't a parenting school that can qualify someone as an excellent parent. In raising our children, everything we do is influenced by our past experiences, outside forces, our own creations, what we are told, how we feel, and generally what we have borrowed from many sources. Some things are best learnt by exposure and influence, therefore set a good example. You can't teach the kids everything.

I know in both rural and urban informal settlements, where children are left to play outside and only come home at sunset, keeping an eye on the youngsters can be extremely difficult.

šŸ“Œ These are a few questions parents should think about throughout the break from school.

1. Who are your kids friends? What is their character?

2. Where do they spend most of their time?

3. How can I make their time meaningful and fun?

4. What are they watching?

5. How are their spending patterns when I give them money?

6. How safe is your child in different spaces?

7. What are some of the repeat patterns?

8. What new things have they learnt?

9. Do they remember to read books?

10. How do you spend time together?

Remember, if you're too busy for your children, someone else will fill the gap. Be present, listen, guide them, and be the first contact person in any matter.
