Ten Things You Should Avoid If You Find Yourself Unemployed.

 #SelfMade

1. Live beyond your means.

2. Take on debt that you cannot afford to repay.

3. Sleep beyond typical hours just because you don't have any engagement.

4. Accept any work that would eventually deprive you of your dignity, focus, and peace.

5. Pray and hope that things work out without doing anything.

6. Join a 'gang' or troop of unemployed people.

7. Strive to impress others.

8. Beg people in your network for job opportunities.

9. Stay comfortable with your acquired knowledge and skills that you can't use anywhere.

10. Blame everybody and everything for your problems.

Would you like to learn more? Schedule a skill-up session with your youth group.  I'm available starting in the second week of September.

Self Made T-shirt Design

 Did You Know?

#SelfMadeSeries

In general, I love all aspects of design. Growing up, people used to tell me, 'You're good at this and not that,' ticking off the boxes of what I can and cannot accomplish as if they held the key to my destiny.

My advise to young people is to approach all opinions, thoughts and feedback with an open mind, but don't let anyone tell you that you can't be this or that. This applies to everyone, including our instructors, parents, mentors, and friends.  Stay focused and intentional in identifying your professional paths, regardless of how long it takes.  However, you can't reach your goal at random, hoping and praying that everything will work out; you must be intentional.

One of my side gigs is print and design; I design banners, T-shirts, logos, brochures, and other materials.  I believe in principles that come from within; this has led to my Self Made concept and brand, which is about discovering oneself and taking deliberate action to develop a credible personal brand.

I see t-shirt design as one of the outlets of expression for reaching out to the public.  My most recent design, 'Do More, Be More, and Be Different', focusses on everything about oneself and draws influence from the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai.

#InternetSource Japanese, "ikigai" (ē”Ÿćē”²ę–) translates to "a reason for being" or "a reason to live". It encompasses the idea of finding joy and meaning in life's activities, and is often linked to longevity and well-being. The concept emphasizes the intersection of what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.

Currently I have 10 pieces of the printed design in orange and green going for only $6, approximately Kes 650. Remember, 10% of the sale will go towards the Play Safe with Dignity Campaign (football shoes and footballs) at Wilsen Initiative (Wi). My personal target is to purchase at least 10 football shoes for the U10 - U15 generation stars playing football in Mathare North.

šŸ“Œ In case you need specific colours for your t-shirt, place your order starting with at least five t-shirts šŸ‘•

Lead Facilitator at Post-Secondary Scholarship Summer Workshop at CMETrust.

The 9th of August will remain one of my most memorable days this month, as I had the privilege of leading a session at the Post-Secondary Scholarship Summer Workshop in Kiambu County, organised by CMETrust. The gathering brought together over 76 bright and ambitious young people all beneficiaries of the CMETrust Scholarship representing universities, colleges, and TVET institutions across Kenya, alongside one international student.

It was more than just a workshop; it was a meeting of minds, dreams, and aspirations, where ideas flowed freely, and the energy in the room reflected the determination of a generation eager to shape their future.

The PSS (Post-secondary Scholarship) Summer Workshop happens once per year and it brings together all the outgoing, active and joining CMETrust Post-secondary Scholars to celebrate the past year's milestones, team building and welcome the new Cohort.

My sessions are usually designed with a participatory approach, rooted in 21st-century learning skills often referred to as the 4 C’s: Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration. These principles guided our activities and discussions, ensuring that participants were not just passive listeners but active contributors to the learning experience.

As a social entrepreneur, trainer, and facilitator, I find deep fulfillment in sharing knowledge, it fuels my passion to do more and reinforces my commitment to building a better society. Every engagement with young people is an opportunity to advocate for self discovery, quality education and lifelong learning, empowering them to become not only job seekers but problem solvers and change-makers within their communities.

šŸ“Œ DID YOU KNOW?

In general, many families from marginalised neighbourhoods continue to face considerable challenges in receiving high-quality, sustainable, and affordable education.  Knowing what to do after finishing school is a different ballgame for many young people with qualifications, and CMETrust is one of the organisations I know that works to build bridges to decent livelihoods through quality education by providing scholarships to bright youth in Mathare.

Here is a brief highlight of the session. In my books there are three schools in life;

1. The formal school – an institution, structure, system, teacher and student.

2. The school of thought – unstructured and involving how you think, react, feel and relate.

3. The street school – All that happens around within your surroundings, both known and unknown, uncontrollable, etc. Generally the society's perception, expectation, reaction, etc.

Remember, true success comes from balancing the knowledge of formal education, the wisdom of experience, and the curiosity of self-driven learning.

šŸ“Œ Inspiration Quote

šŸ“" The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

šŸ“"You may miss out on numerous opportunities not because you are unworthy, but because God has something greater and better in store for you. Don't look back; don't despair.  Continue to do what you enjoy doing, with compassion and an open mind." - Wilson Masaka, Youth and Social Entrepreneur

🌱 "Never underestimate humble beginnings; plant your seed today, keep watering and nurturing it, and one day you will reap the fruits of your labour.

Thank you, CMETrust, for the invitation; I believe the attendees left with additional thoughts and knowledge that will direct their paths in and out of school.

Don't Get Caught Off Guard: 10 Things You Must Know As an Employee.

šŸ“Œ World Of Work Series +throughMylens šŸ“ø Bits and Pieces

Today I'd like to give some thoughts based on my personal experiences as an employee. I've been employed and self-employed for at least 7 years in each, so I've gained expertise in both areas.

To all employees, keep in mind that you will not work with that firm or organisation indefinitely; one day, the shift will occur, and the worst part is when you will not be prepared or expecting it to occur.

Here are ten things you should master that will serve as your shield in the known or unknown future.  Remember that your employer will retain their assets, monthly salary, and any other associated packs, but the following is what you require do if you wish to keep on track beyond your current job.

1. Financial  Literacy - Build a savings plan or portfolio earlier. Remember, it's not based on how much but rather on inculcating the habit and culture of saving at the earliest time possible regardless of the amount.

2. Invest wisely – do due diligence and research around and start. There are many products in the financial market that you don't know exist that would save your future that the bank never tells you exist. In my experience banks (maybe not all) would like you to spend your money through their designed products or just keep your money intact in the name of safety.

3. Learn to earn – Learn new skills and stay on course within the career pathways, and most importantly, stay relevant.

4. Meaningful Networking – Getting people's telephone numbers or business cards if they are still in use isn't networking. Good networking means strategically finding synergies in people based on interests, passion and collaboration points. Always find common ground that will turn a meeting into a partnership.

5. Solve a problem – There are a million unsolved problems in the society. Choose one or two at most and create a solution around it.

6. Don't be obsessed by specific titles or roles, as an employee chance is that the title you're searching for might not exist in the other organisation's organogram. Learn to be flexible and build traits that will give you bargaining power regardless of your new title. Be an expert in your chosen field.

7. Do what you love, love what you do. Make self-discovery a continuous process. Never drop things that make you happy. For example, I love football, and wherever I go there will always be some element of it.

8. Be an initiator – there's no problem with searching for the next job to be employed, but also don't deny yourself an opportunity to start something even if you don't have all the required resources.

9. Explore the job market by applying for job opportunities even if you have a contract running. It is the only way to prepare and learn what's required by the next possible employer.

10. Build meaningful friendships in the workplace. Not everyone at your workplace has the best interests for your progress. Working together, going for lunch and laughing together doesn't necessarily mean everyone likes you; some of your workmates are your silent competitors eyeing your position, eagerly waiting for your exit.

Lastly, the day you leave that organisation or company, no one will care about your next endeavours other than your family. So create more time with your family because they got to see you in full circle.

šŸ“Œ Quotes

šŸ’” "The Wilsen Initiative philosophy and idea are founded on the basis of personal discovery to do more for oneself, family and community using available resources, noting time, skill and talent as the linchpin of everything."  - Wilson Masaka , founder and team leader of Wilsen Initiative (Wi).  Do More, Be More & Be Different.

🌱 "Never underestimate humble beginnings; plant your seed today, keep watering and nurturing it, and one day you will reap the fruits of your labour.
