Types of Friends: Understanding Human Relationships

Friendships are among the most valuable relationships we form throughout our lives. However, not all friendships are created for the same purpose or season. Understanding the different types of friends helps us appreciate people for who they are rather than expecting everyone to play the same role in our lives. Broadly speaking, friendships can be categorized into three groups.

1. Situational Friends

Situational friends are individuals we meet and bond with because of shared circumstances, environments, or experiences. These friendships are often built around a common context rather than a deep personal connection.

Examples include:

- Classmates in school or university.

- Colleagues at work.

- Teammates in sports.

- Neighbors.

- Members of the same club, church, or organization.

These friendships can be meaningful and enjoyable, but they often change when the situation changes. When people graduate, change jobs, relocate, or pursue different life paths, many situational friendships naturally fade.

Key lesson: Appreciate situational friends for the role they play during a particular chapter of your life. Not every friendship is meant to last forever, and that does not diminish its value.

2. Lifetime Friends

Lifetime friends are rare and invaluable. These are people who remain part of your life despite changes in distance, career, age, or social status. The relationship is built on trust, loyalty, mutual respect, and shared values rather than convenience.

Characteristics of lifetime friends include:

- They celebrate your successes without jealousy.

- They offer honest advice, even when it is difficult to hear.

- They support you during hardships.

- Time and distance do not weaken the friendship.

- They accept you for who you are while encouraging you to become better.

Lifetime friendships require intentional effort, forgiveness, communication, and reciprocity. Like any meaningful relationship, they must be nurtured over time.

Key lesson: It is better to have a few genuine lifetime friends than hundreds of superficial acquaintances.

3. Family

Family represents the relationships we are born into and, in some cases, those we choose through marriage or adoption. While family members are not automatically friends, the strongest families often cultivate genuine friendship among themselves.

Healthy family relationships are characterized by:

- Unconditional love.

- A shared history and identity.

- Mutual responsibility.

- Support during both joyful and difficult seasons.

- A sense of belonging.

Unlike other friendships, family relationships often endure despite disagreements and challenges. Strong families intentionally build trust, communicate openly, forgive one another, and create lasting traditions.

It is also important to remember that some people develop "chosen families" individuals who are not related by blood but who provide the same level of love, support, and commitment.

Key lesson: Treasure your family relationships whenever possible, as they often provide the first and longest-lasting support system in life.

Final Reflection

šŸ“ A wise person learns to recognize each relationship for what it is:

šŸ“ Situational friends walk with you through a season.

šŸ“ Lifetime friends walk with you through life's journey.

Family forms the foundation from which many of our relationships begin and, ideally, remain a lifelong source of belonging.

The mistake many people make is expecting a situational friend to behave like a lifetime friend, or assuming that family bonds automatically guarantee friendship. Healthy relationships require understanding, realistic expectations, and intentional investment.

Takeaway: Value every person according to the role they play in your life. Some people are there for a moment, some for a lifetime, and family whether by birth or by choice often forms the roots from which we grow.

5 S.T.E.P.S Forward

Self Made: Life Series Bits and Pieces

#ThroughMyLens

Young people often ask me, “What does it take to move forward in life?” There are many answers to that question, but one thing stands out: success does not come from relying entirely on luck or waiting for the perfect moment. Progress comes from taking deliberat5e steps every day.

That is why I came up with the S.T.E.P.S acronym, which I would recommend to anyone who wants to move forward in life.

5 S.T.E.P.S >> Forward

S – Self-Awareness

T – Talent Monetization

E – Effort Unlimited

P – Passion Unmatched

S – Skill Up

✅ Self-Awareness – Know yourself. Understand your strengths, weaknesses, values, and purpose.

✅ Talent Monetization – Turn your gifts into value. Identify what you do well and find ways to create opportunities from it.

✅ Effort Unlimited – Outwork the obstacles. Consistent effort often achieves what talent alone cannot.

✅ Passion Unmatched – Stay committed to your purpose. Passion fuels perseverance when challenges arise.

✅ Skill Up – Never stop learning. The more you grow your skills, the more valuable and adaptable you become.

Every successful person started somewhere—with a dream, a decision, and a single step.

Take the first STEP today, and the next STEP tomorrow. Before long, you will look back and realize that those small STEPS carried you forward into the life you once imagined.

What Make a Great Idea

What makes a great idea?

There are many ways to measure the value of an idea, and different people may define greatness differently. Generally speaking, there is very little that is entirely new under the sun. Most innovations are evolutions, improvements, or adaptations of existing concepts. Change is constant, and evolution is unstoppable.

At its core, a great idea should solve a problem, address a need, or eliminate a pain point within an ecosystem. The greater the problem it solves and the more people it benefits, the greater its potential impact.

However, an idea alone is rarely enough. The person or organization behind the idea often influences its success. Reputation, expertise, financial resources, networks, and the ability to execute can determine whether an idea remains a concept or becomes a transformative solution. History is full of brilliant ideas that failed due to poor execution and ordinary ideas that succeeded because they were executed exceptionally well.

During one of the fellowship programs I attended, a mentor shared a simple but profound insight: "If you have a great idea that has been tested and validated, look for money. If you have money, look for ideas that will keep your money growing and sustainable."

The philosophy behind this statement is that ideas and capital need each other. Money without good ideas eventually loses direction, while great ideas without resources often struggle to reach their full potential. Sustainable progress happens when vision, execution, and resources come together.

The philosophy behind the quote;

šŸ“ Many successful innovations come from observing ordinary things differently.

šŸ“ Opportunities often pass unnoticed because people are distracted, unprepared, or dismissive.

šŸ“ Timing matters; an idea can be valuable today and irrelevant tomorrow.

šŸ“ Awareness, curiosity, and action are often what separate people who spot opportunities from those who miss them.

Organisation Change, Team Formation and Team Dynamics

Organisation Culture and Behaviour

#Founders360°

Organisation Culture and Behaviour
Organisation Change & Team Formation
#Founders360°

Having the right materials, equipment, and of course financial resources is important for any organisation seeking to achieve its goals, objectives, mission, and vision. However, beyond all these resources, people remain the greatest asset of any organisation. They are the ones who will either drive progress or stagnate growth, even when all the resources are available.

Poor organisational culture has denied many institutions the opportunity to remain pacesetters in their chosen fields. On the other hand, organisations that continue to lead understand that success is not only about securing funds to keep operations running. They know that building a strong human resource system and cultivating a unique organisational culture one that promotes personal growth, connectivity, loyalty, and shared values is what attracts and sustains everything else.

One way to assess whether an organisation has a great culture is by looking at its former employees. Organisations that value people create lasting impressions that extend beyond employment. Unfortunately, many organisations pay little attention to transitions. Recruitment is often ad hoc, retention strategies are weak, and exits are treated as inevitable rather than opportunities to strengthen relationships.

So, how do you recognise a healthy organisational culture through former employees?

1. They proudly mention their former employer.
2. They refer prospective donors, partners, and talented individuals to the organisation.
3. They visit the organisation occasionally, even without official invitations.

Anyway, here are three types of teams you may currently have in your organisation:

1. Survivors

These individuals are simply hanging on. As long as they get paid, they are comfortable. They rarely inspire positive change, creativity, or innovation. They operate on default settings doing what they are used to doing or what they are told to do. Remove the salary, and you may never see them around again.

2. The Committed

These are hardworking individuals who are actively involved in many activities. However, the challenge is distinguishing commitment from growth. Commitment and progress are two different things and do not automatically translate into problem-solving, creativity, or innovation. The good thing about the committed type is that they are usually the ones who remain during difficult times.

3. Legacy Builders

Legacy team members are rare in many organisations. In some circles, serving an organisation for a long time is wrongly perceived as stagnation. But this group is more than committed they are loyal, intelligent, passionate, creative, leaders,  high-performing, and true brand ambassadors.

Their passion, skills, ambition, and creativity become part of the organisation's DNA. Whenever the organisation is mentioned, their names are likely to come up because they have made a lasting impact. Interestingly, their exit often creates noticeable disruption because of the value they brought.

In conclusion, it is relatively easy to recruit Survivors, possible to attract the Committed, but much harder to identify, nurture, and retain Legacy Builders.

What type of team members does your organisation have? And more importantly, what type of culture are you intentionally building?

How Well Does Internet Know Me

 I AM ___

As a mentor, trainer, and facilitator, I often challenge my mentees and participants to conduct a personal audit, especially on their online personal brand.

It is an interesting exercise because the internet is now the global village, and everyone contributes to their digital identity knowingly or unknowingly. The question is: How well does the internet know you?

Today, I did a simple search šŸ” "How well does the internet know me?" and I was amazed by the results. The search pulled together information from different sources and painted a summary of who I am online.

This is something I would love to share with you, and I encourage you to try the same exercise.

Overall Assessment

Internet Visibility: 8/10

The internet knows me primarily as:

šŸ“ A community leader

šŸ“ A youth advocate

šŸ“ A football coach

šŸ“ A creative professional

šŸ“ A social entrepreneur

Actually, this is who I AM! :) and more...

It's fascinating to see how our actions, projects, and contributions shape our digital footprint over time.

What about you?

How well does the internet know you? Try it out and share your findings.

Ongoing Campaign Wilsen Initiative (Wi) Play Safe With Dignity Resource Mobilization for U15 Boys and Girls.

Life Series: Bits and Pieces

šŸ“ Football Made Me Series ⚽šŸ“ø

šŸ“ Ongoing Campaign Wilsen Initiative (Wi) Play Safe With Dignity Resource Mobilization for U15 Boys and Girls.

Football Changes Lives.

❤️ In this season of World Cup, help me connect at 50 youngsters with a pair of quality shoes.

"Football made me, now it's my turn to help football make the next generation.  Because sometimes, all a child needs is a ball, a pair of boots, and someone who believes in them." - Wilson Masaka

Every effort counts!

I am a passionate former footballer, currently coaching and mentoring the next generation of players to succeed and find sustainable pathways both on and off the field. One of the many things I love doing is documenting the entire journey within the football ecosystem through my lens.

I remember playing barefoot. That experience continues to inspire my work under the Wilsen Initiative, where we are committed to supporting the next generation of stars with quality football shoes through the "Play Safe With Dignity" campaign.

Since the inception of the campaign in 2000, we have reached more than 700 young people with a pair of quality football shoes—giving them not just equipment, but confidence, safety, and hope.

You are most welcome to donate footballs, football shoes, or other related resources to grassroots teams.

Feel free to link up with me if you would like to support us in reaching more struggling teams, especially U15 boys and girls in Mathare Valley. Together, we can ensure that talent is not limited by circumstance.

10 Things You Should Do if You Ever Find Yourself Jobless.

Life Series: Joblessness Isn't Hopelessness

Here are 10 things you should do if you ever find yourself jobless.

Remember, routines create patterns, patterns become habits, habits shape behaviour, and behaviour eventually forms beliefs that become part of who you are. I have been there once, and I want to share these little nuggets of wisdom.

Here we go:

1. Sleep well, but don't oversleep.
Go to bed on time and wake up early. You may ask, "To do what?" Use the extra time to read, learn a skill, help someone, or work on your personal growth.

2. Volunteer.
Offer your time and skills where you can. Volunteering opens doors, builds networks, and gives you valuable experience.

3. Don't isolate yourself.
Spend time with people who can add value to your life—and this doesn't mean hanging out in pubs. Surround yourself with positive and progressive individuals.

4. Have a meeting with yourself.
Ask tough questions:

- What else can I do?
- What opportunities am I overlooking?
- If I don't act now, what are the consequences?

Self-reflection can be the beginning of transformation.

5. Build or join meaningful circles of friends.
It's easier to belong to a social circle than a progressive circle. Know the difference. Social circles are often based on circumstances, while progressive circles are united by common goals and a desire to grow.

6. Do what you love and love what you do.
Passion alone may not pay immediately, but it gives you the energy to keep going until opportunities come.

7. Never underestimate the power of exercise.
You don't need a gym membership. Create deliberate routines—walk long distances, jog, visit the market, or play sports. A healthy body supports a healthy mind.

8. Talk to people.
Self-marketing is not a bad thing. Let people know what you can do, but make sure you have something valuable to offer. Create value and let others know about it.

9. Detect distractions at all costs.
Avoid unnecessary browsing, endless scrolling, or programs that only make you feel sad and discouraged. Protect your mind and your time.

10. Understand that life is a competition—starting with yourself.
You are not the same person you were yesterday. Compete to become better every day. Yes, there are many others in your situation, and some may seem luckier. But don't make luck your primary goal. Instead, break the chains of comfort and keep moving forward.

Remember:
Being jobless is not the same as being hopeless. Don't let joblessness turn into hopelessness.

I hope you have learned something from this. I am always available to offer training and mentorship to young people.

Being jobless can feel like being in an empty room where all you hear is the echo of your own silent voice. Dare to open the doors and windows by stepping forward—not only with courage, but with attitude, skills, knowledge, and by choosing the right tools.

I call this philosophy ASK-T.

My Photography Journey +throughMylens

šŸ“ø Self Made Series

The same camera, the same lens, and sometimes even the same environment can produce completely different results. Why? Because beyond the equipment, you need an extra pair of eyes in every situation—a fresh perspective.

Without a doubt, your camera, lens, and other gear play a role in the quality of your work. However, the greatest difference often comes from how you think, observe, and interpret what is in front of you. You cannot expect different outcomes while seeing everything through the same mindset.

Photography is not only about mastering the technical aspects; it is also about developing the way you see the world. Your perspective, creativity, patience, communication, and ability to connect with environment (the wild, the people, the street etc) all influence the final image.

Learn both the hard skills and the soft skills. Master your equipment, but also master your mindset. In the end, great photographs are created not just by the camera in your hands, but by the vision behind your eyes.

The Power of Context: Why Good Ideas Sometimes Fail

You don't necessarily need to create something that has never been done before. What matters is your ability to solve an existing problem from a different perspective and in a way that meets a real need.

Take a simple example. If you travel into many rural communities, you'll quickly realize that owning a smartphone is still a dream for many people. In some places, access to a library is almost unheard of. This tells us that needs and priorities differ from one environment to another.

Before starting an organization, business, project, or initiative, don't copy ideas blindly simply because they worked somewhere else. First, conduct proper research within your target area. Understand the people, their challenges, purchasing power, priorities, and whether there is genuine demand for your product or service.

For instance, imagine setting up a business in a rural area of Kenya. Which product is likely to have a wider market: an expensive shampoo or an affordable medicated soap that addresses a common daily need? The answer may seem obvious, yet many entrepreneurs overlook such realities.

Sometimes an idea is not failing because it is bad. The problem is that it is being implemented in the wrong environment or for the wrong audience. When the operating conditions are off track, businesses close early, projects lose momentum, and great ideas slowly die.

A successful idea is not only about innovation; it is also about understanding the context in which that innovation is meant to serve.

Quote:

"An idea does not succeed simply because it is good; it succeeds when it solves the right problem for the right people at the right time." — Wilson Masaka

More Than a Pair Of Football Shoes

Play Safe With Dignity Campaign

#FootballMadeMeSeries #Footballs #FootballJerseys #FootballShoesBoots

šŸ“ More Than a Pair of Football Boots

The Play Safe With Dignity football boots and sports resources campaign is an ongoing initiative by Wilsen Initiative (Wi). Since its inception in the year 2000, the campaign has reached more than 700 children and young footballers with quality football boots.

Some years, we surpass our annual target of 35 pairs through a single event, while at other times, the support comes gradually—one or two pairs each month. Despite these efforts, many young and talented players still train and play barefoot, exposing themselves to avoidable injuries and limiting their ability to perform at their best.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to connect Ozil Odhiambo with a pair of football boots as a way of encouraging him to keep believing in his journey, regardless of the challenges he may face. While the boots may not last forever, the gesture and the hope it inspires can leave a lasting memory in his football journey. My hope is that one day, he too will be in a position to support another young player and keep the cycle of giving alive.

My inspiration for this campaign comes from my own football journey. Between the ages of 10 and 14, I played barefoot. My turning point came when I received my first pair of football boots as a gift after being recognized as the best player in a tournament. That moment changed how I viewed football and showed me the power of encouragement and opportunity.

This campaign does not distribute football boots randomly. We consider factors such as a player's commitment to team, discipline, performance, and school attendance. We strongly believe that excellence in sports should go hand in hand with education, helping young people achieve success both on and off the field.

I would like to call upon friends, partners, well-wishers, and football lovers to join us in this ongoing cause. Together, we can help more young players play safely, dream bigger, and pursue their goals with dignity.

A special thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign over the years. Your contribution continues to make a real difference in the lives of many young footballers.

Remember:

šŸ“ "If you're doing something for show, it may only last for a moment. But if you're doing it for a cause, its impact can endure long beyond your lifetime."

The "Engine" Behind a Successful Organisation

Happy New Month! 🌟

Work Place Series

šŸ“ The "Engine" Behind a Successful Organisation

#HumanResource #OrganisationCultureAndBehaviour

Have you ever worked tirelessly behind the scenes, coming up with innovative and creative ideas, only to see all the recognition go to your boss without any acknowledgement of your contribution—even when your involvement is obvious?

The reality is that no one wants to appear uninformed, and very few people are willing to admit what they do not know. Only a handful of leaders truly understand the value of publicly giving credit where it is due. Those who do often build stronger teams, boost morale, and inspire even greater achievements.

If you find yourself behind the scenes of a great idea or successful project, here are eight things to keep in mind. Remember, many people are competing for the organisational spotlight, especially where rewards, promotions, and job security are involved.

8 Things You Should Do

1. Never sabotage your boss.
Be a keen listener and observer. Professionalism will always serve you better than resentment.

2. Stay humble.
Never embarrass your boss in public forums. Let your work speak for itself.

3. Keep learning and sharpening your skills.
Strive to become an expert in your field so that your value extends beyond your current organisation.

4. Always have an exit strategy.
Even when things are going well, prepare for future opportunities and changes.

5. Explore side hustles and new opportunities.
Step outside your comfort zone and diversify your skills and income streams.

6. Don't be afraid to apply for other opportunities.
Career growth often comes from being open to new possibilities.

7. Know your worth and negotiate when necessary.
During performance reviews, discuss your contributions and explore opportunities for salary or package improvements. This process helps you better understand both yourself and the organisation.

8. Build a strong professional network.
Surround yourself with people who can support, recommend, and advocate for your career growth.

Bonus Tip:

Start your own venture if the opportunity arises. Do what you love and love what you do. Nothing  is more rewarding than becoming the person you aspire to be and working where you truly belong.
