THE GENESIS

The Play Safe With Dignity Football Campaign was born from personal experience.

Growing up, I played football barefoot.

Like many children from underserved communities, I knew what it meant to chase a dream without the basic equipment needed to play safely. Every match came with the risk of cuts, bruises and injuries, but our passion for football kept us going.

More than 30 years later, the story looks remarkably familiar.

Every weekend, I spend time watching football matches, from U10 to senior teams, and through my camera I see more than just the game.

I see the struggle.
The unspoken stories.
The passion.
The dreams.
The resilience.

All wrapped in bumpy, dusty fields where young players continue to show up, weekend after weekend, because they believe in the game they love.

Apart from my photography journey, I get to meet talented boys and girls playing with the same passion and determination that defined our generation.

Having come full circle from playing football in an informal settlement to now documenting and supporting young players I see things differently.

The dust.
The barefoot players.
The limited equipment.
The pressure on young players.
A different generation.
The same passion.
Similar challenges.

And it got me thinking:

How can I help improve their journey?

THE BIG QUESTION ⁉️

If there is one question every young footballer should be asking, it is:

“How do we transition to the next level of football, and how can football help us build a more sustainable livelihood, considering where we come from?”

Because football should be more than just a game.

It can be a pathway to discipline, education, opportunity, networks, exposure and a better future.

We deliberately identify young players who demonstrate talent, discipline, commitment and dedication.

SPORTS FOR PEACE | PEACE STARTS WITH ME & YOU The International

 🕊️ Day of Peace 2026 will be observed on Monday, September 21, 2026, under the theme:

“Invest in Peace — For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the launch of the Sports for Peace Initiative, organised by 23 Allstars F.C. in collaboration with various partners.

Apart from being the main photographer, I was honoured to share a short message about peace.

My message was simple: Sustainable peace starts with oneself.

It starts with me and you.

From the individual, it spreads to the family, where peace becomes part of our values and nature. From the family, it grows into the community and society, eventually spreading across borders and territories locally, regionally and internationally.

🇰🇪 As Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Elections, we all have a role to play.

We must protect the fabric that binds us together through peace, love and unity, and perhaps even weave it stronger for the next generation.

My desire is that one day, elections in Kenya will simply be a celebration of our democratic progress and a shared hope for a better future, regardless of who wins a particular position.

I dream of a Kenya where our systems, institutions and the values enshrined in our Constitution give every citizen confidence that an election is not something to fear.

No citizen should have to panic or live with anxiety about violence simply because an election is taking place.

🕊️ But peace doesn't begin at the ballot box. It begins with us.

What we feed our minds.

What we watch.

What we write online and offline.

The conversations we have.

The friends we keep.

The places we visit.

And the values we choose to live by.

All these things contribute to the kind of peace we create around us.

Peace starts with me, Peace starts with you.

Exposure, in this context, means what you intentionally introduce your children to—the experiences, skills, people, environments and ideas you allow them to encounter. What children are exposed to can influence what they become, what they believe is possible, and the paths they choose to pursue.

THE LEARNING CURVE

This isn't a flashback; it is a flash forward to many more opportunities to impact, learn, teach and share.

Today, I want to celebrate myself for remaining true to the call despite the challenges along the way.

One of those calls that is part of my DNA is learning, teaching and sharing knowledge. I believe that by sharing knowledge, I stand to learn even more. I don't lose anything in the process; I become better.

As a self-starter, I have mastered the art of navigating the streets and becoming more schooled under the philosophy of Street School—a school where possibilities for learning exist everywhere, even in places and situations where learning isn't expected.

I want to thank each and every person, institution and organisation that has contributed to my learning curve, and more so those who have opened their doors and created opportunities for me to train their beneficiaries, share knowledge and help people become even better.

Over the years, I have captured some of these thoughts in my Bits & Pieces of Wisdom series.

BITS & PIECES ON SELF-LEARNING

1. School may come to an end at some point, but learning has no end. Learning takes place everywhere.

2. You lose nothing by sharing knowledge. On the contrary, you become even better.

3. Knowledge isn't power by itself. It becomes power when it is put into use.

4. Don't just read for the sake of reading. Read with purpose.

5. No one was born knowing everything. We learn through experience, structure, exposure and the values that shape who we become.

6. What you read, watch, listen to and expose yourself to contributes significantly to who you become.

7. Reading has never been easy for everyone, but through routine and consistent practice, it can become a habit—and eventually a lifelong way of learning.

8. Learning doesn't always come with a classroom, a teacher or a certificate. Sometimes, life itself becomes the curriculum.

9. Stay curious. The moment you stop asking questions may be the moment you stop growing.

10. Every person you meet knows something you don't. Be humble enough to learn from them.

11. Experience is a teacher, but reflection is what turns experience into wisdom.

12. Don't only learn from what went right. Some of life's most valuable lessons come from what went wrong.

13. A certificate can prove that you completed a course; your application of knowledge proves that you learned.

14. The smartest person in the room isn't always the one speaking. Sometimes, it is the one listening and taking notes.

15. Learning without application becomes information. Application turns information into skill.

16. Your environment is part of your education. Pay attention to what it is teaching you.

17. Never be embarrassed to be a beginner. Every expert once had a first day.

18. Teach what you know, learn what you don't, and never be afraid to admit the difference.

19. Don't wait for someone to discover your potential. Invest in yourself before the opportunity arrives.

20. The internet can give you information, but only discipline can turn information into transformation.

21. Read beyond your profession. Sometimes your next breakthrough is hiding in a subject you never thought you needed.

22. Learning isn't about knowing everything. It is about knowing what you don't know and having the courage to find out.

23. A closed mind can turn a great opportunity into an ordinary experience. Stay teachable.

24. Your greatest classroom may be the places you were never expected to learn from.

25. Self-learning isn't learning alone. It is taking responsibility for your own growth.

26. Don't measure learning only by how much you know. Measure it by how differently you think, act and solve problems.

27. The day you think you have arrived may be the day you should start looking for another road to learn from.

28. The learning curve has no graduation day. You don't finish learning; you simply become better equipped for the next lesson.

ADVICE TO EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS

Here are a few lessons I would share with every emerging photographer:

1️⃣ Own your equipment.
As much as possible, invest in your own tools. Your camera and equipment are not just gadgets—they are part of your profession.

2️⃣ Negotiate the Terms of Reference (TOR).
Before you pick up your camera, be clear about what is expected: the assignment, deliverables, duration, usage of images, payment and timelines.

3️⃣ Don't work on the hope of better terms later.
If the terms don't make sense now, don't assume they will magically improve tomorrow. Agree on expectations from the beginning.

4️⃣ Keep your prospects open.
Don't tie yourself to one client or opportunity. Build relationships, explore different opportunities and remain open to working with multiple prospects.

5️⃣ Volunteering is good but define the boundaries.
Volunteering can help you gain experience, exposure and networks. But have a clear start and end date, scope of work and expectations. Don't let "volunteering" become an indefinite arrangement.

6️⃣ Stop giving away your work anyhow.
Taking a few photographs for free occasionally is okay. But free work should not become the norm. Your time, skills, equipment, transport and creativity all have value.

People naturally love free things. The challenge comes when you eventually decide to charge—because you may discover that those who were happy to receive your work for free aren't necessarily willing to pay even KSh 50.

Learn to create value. Learn to communicate your value. And, most importantly, learn to charge for it.

There Are Three Types of Dreams

Not every dream is at the same stage.

Some dreams belong to the past.

Some are alive in the present.

And some only show up when something triggers them.

So, where is your dream today?

Here we go. 👇🏾

1. THE DEAD DREAM 💭

This is a dream that no longer has space in your current reality.

The desire may still exist somewhere within you, but circumstances, time, changing priorities, opportunities or factors beyond your control may have made the dream unrealistic or impossible to pursue in its original form.

You may still love the idea of it, but continuing to chase it without reassessing your reality could turn the dream into a mission impossible.

Sometimes, personal discovery means having the courage to say:

“This was my dream then. It may not be my dream now.”

A dead dream doesn't mean you have failed.

It may simply mean it is time to discover a new dream.

2. THE AWAKENED DREAM 🔥

This is the dream that is alive and active in your present.

It is connected to what you currently love, what you are doing, what you are learning, what you desire and the possibilities you can see around you.

There are signs pointing towards the land of possibility.

But a dream alone is not enough.

It needs a system.

It needs consistency.

It needs learning.

It needs discipline.

It needs action.

This is your best bet for turning possibility into progress.

An awakened dream asks:

What can I do today to move one step closer to the future I see?

3. THE LUKEWARM DREAM 🌡️

This dream flickers for a moment.

Something happens.

You attend an inspiring event.

You hear someone's story.

You watch a video.

You meet someone successful.

You suddenly say:

“I want to do that!”

For a moment, the dream feels real.

Then the moment passes.

You return to your default settings.

The excitement disappears, and nothing concrete happens.

This is the lukewarm dream; many wishes, many hopes and many moments of inspiration, but little or no consistent action towards turning the dream into reality.

It isn't necessarily that the dream is bad.

The problem is that the dream has not yet been activated.

SO, WHERE IS YOUR DREAM?

Is it Dead?

Is it Awakened?

Or is it simply Lukewarm?

Personal discovery begins when you stop only asking:

“What is my dream?”

…and start asking:

“What am I doing about it?”

D.R.E.A.M.

D — Discover yourself, your interests, strengths and possibilities.

R — Reflect on where you are, where you have been and where you want to go.

E — Explore opportunities, ideas, skills and different pathways.

A — Act by turning intention into consistent action.

M — Master your craft through learning, practice, discipline and lifelong growth.

Because a dream becomes more meaningful when you understand yourself, explore possibilities, and take action.

NOW YOU KNOW.

Activate yourself.

Evaluate where your dream currently stands.

Then ask yourself:

What is one thing I can do today to move my dream from thought to action?

The Moral Fabric of Society

📍 We Are Living in a Ticking Time Bomb 💣

— The Declining Value System

When abnormality becomes normal, society enters dangerous territory. A wrong is still a wrong, and two wrongs can never make a right.

But perhaps the darkest part of this unexplained tunnel is when something wrong happens and nobody questions it. The silence becomes louder, even from the very quarters we expect to lead us by example.

Our Society Today

1. The Erosion of Communal Responsibility

Today, a child can only be questioned by their parents. In some cases, some children cannot be questioned by anyone not even their parents.

We are slowly losing the belief that raising a child is a shared responsibility of the community.

2. Immorality Is Becoming Entertainment

Good deeds are increasingly being overshadowed by the celebration of questionable behaviour. Many people don't want to be left behind.

Going viral, even for the wrong reasons, is becoming the new measure of relevance.

3. From Umtaa Mentality to Uta Doo Mentality

The shift is becoming risky day after day from the umtaa mentality, where everything can be shaped by narrow, biased and negative thoughts and behaviours that do not represent the expected norm, regionally or even globally, to the uta doo mentality:

“It's not my problem. Do what you want to do.”

It is a mentality where some people feel untouchable, even when there is evidence of wrongdoing.

As a result, everyone looks away. People feel helpless and, slowly, begin to slide into the same behaviour because it becomes the rule of the game.

4. The Fading of Role Models in Leadership Circles

Finding genuine role models is becoming increasingly difficult.

Too many people are spinning the coin, hoping it lands in their favour at the expense of others. Principles seem negotiable when personal interests take centre stage.

5. When Numbers Become More Important Than Values

The pursuit of many followers can sometimes become more important than standing with the few who speak, live by and defend the values and principles that form the foundation of everyone's success.

It becomes a “man-eat-man” society, where trust is slowly becoming a word that exists only in the dictionary.

6. Good Advice Is Mistaken for Envy

Unsolicited advice, even when offered with good intentions, is increasingly interpreted as jealousy or ill will rather than goodwill.

We have become so defensive that sometimes we would rather hear praise than truth.

7. The Rules Keep Changing

The rules of the game seem to be defined according to convenience.

One man's meat is another man's poison.

What is right today can suddenly become wrong tomorrow, depending on who benefits.

8. Humanity Is Losing Ground

Somehow, humanity and Ubuntu are slowly sliding backwards.

Our love for gadgets and constant digital connection is sometimes coming at the expense of human connection, empathy and genuine conversation.

9. Good Manners Are Becoming Old-Fashioned

Saying “thank you,” asking politely, greeting people and generally showing good manners are, in some spaces, being treated as old-fashioned or backward.

Yet these simple values are part of what holds a society together.

10. The Crowd Is Louder Than the Conscience

A crowd mentality that leads nowhere is often celebrated more than the courage to stand alone with a sober mind and a clear sense of direction.

Sometimes, being different is not rebellion.

Sometimes, it is simply having the courage to think.

So, Where Are We Headed?

The moral fabric of society is not destroyed in one day. It is weakened slowly—one compromise, one silence, one excuse and one accepted wrong at a time.

The question is not whether society is changing. Society will always change.

The real question is:

What values are we carrying forward, and what values are we quietly leaving behind?

📍 We cannot keep normalising what should concern us.

📍 We cannot keep celebrating what should challenge us.

📍 And we cannot expect the next generation to become better than the example we give them today.

📍 A society that stops questioning wrong eventually starts calling wrong normal.

The Brand Called YOU.

Yesterday, we had a great session at Wale Wale, Kibera, for the I AM_ Self Made Series — One-Day Training.

It was a day of conversations, reflection, learning and discovery.

We explored some of the questions that don't always have simple answers:

Who am I?
What do I have?
What can I learn?
What can I create?
Where do I want to go?
What must I do to get there?

These are not questions with one-size-fits-all answers.

They are the beginning of a journey.

Here are some picture highlights from the session.

Who Is It For?

The programme is designed for teens and young people aged 13–35 years, with sessions adapted to the age, context and needs of participants.

It is particularly suited for schools, youth groups, community organisations, football academies, CBOs, NGOs and other youth-focused spaces.

Career Pathway

The question is simple: Which way?

Yet, defining or designing a career pathway is one of the toughest decisions many young people face especially those growing up in underserved communities.

For many, life itself is already a struggle. From raising school fees to staying in school throughout the academic calendar, some learners are frequently sent home because of fee balances. In such circumstances, hope becomes a powerful currency the belief that one day things will get better.

At school, teachers often ask the familiar question: “What do you want to become when you grow up?”

It sounds like a simple question, but the answer isn't always that simple.

Sometimes, what the heart desires doesn't connect with the reality around us. Even when a young person performs well academically, there are still questions about opportunities, finances, access and whether the chosen career will eventually provide a sustainable livelihood. And for those who don't perform well in examinations, the situation can feel even more uncertain.

On the flip side, choosing a career pathway can appear much easier when life provides room to explore, experiment, fail, learn and try again. But for many young people, career decisions are made under pressure, with limited information and very little room for trial and error.

I believe many young people are confronted by three competing choices when thinking about their careers:

1. What your parents want.

2. What you want.

3. What the market needs.

From my own journey and from witnessing the struggles many young people go through after school I believe what your parents want should not be the sole determinant of your career pathway.

Yes, parents invest heavily in their children's education. They sacrifice, pay school fees and want the best for their children. But that investment should not become a contract that dictates an entire lifetime.

Parents should guide, advise and expose their children to possibilities without necessarily deciding their destination.

For me, the better question is:

What do you want to do, and how can you align that passion with what the market needs?

We live in a rapidly changing world where technology continues to reshape careers, businesses and the way we work. Some jobs that were common yesterday are changing, while new opportunities are emerging that previous generations could never have imagined.

Therefore, young people need more than career choices. They need career awareness.

They need to understand themselves, discover their strengths, explore different industries, develop relevant skills and continuously learn.

Your career pathway doesn't have to be a straight line.

You can change direction.

You can learn something new.

You can start again.

You can combine your passion with a marketable skill.

The goal is not simply to choose a career. The goal is to design a pathway that connects who you are, what you love, what you can become good at, and what the world needs.

Perhaps the most important career question isn't “What do you want to be?”

It is:

“What problem do you want to solve, and what skills do you need to solve it?”

Yesterday, I had the honour of joining five football teams/academies, with over 500 participants in attendance, for a one-day tournament held at Mbotela Canon Tuff Grounds and St. Paul’s Primary School in Makongeni, Nairobi Ward.

The tournament was hosted by Halisi Sports Services, and it was a pleasure to be part of the photography team, capturing the energy, talent and spirit of young people through my lens. 📸⚽

On the flip side, it was also a perfect opportunity to share my photography skills with my daughter Debbie and Adriano as part of their ongoing learning journey.

I am a self-taught photographer. My journey began in 2009 during a work-related mission in Zanzibar. What started as curiosity has grown into a lifelong mission: using photography, storytelling, and lived experiences to inspire change.

The school holidays are here. The question is: How will young people spend their three-week break from school?

As an advocate for creating safe spaces for youth development, I am dedicating three hours of pro bono training and facilitation to organized groups within Nairobi. This opportunity is open to football clubs, football academies, community-based organizations (CBOs), chamas, self-help groups, youth groups, and church youth ministries.

During the master session, I share my journey as a change-maker, youth advocate, social entrepreneur, and trainer. The goal is to bridge the knowledge gap by equipping young people—especially those from underserved communities—with practical skills, inspiration, and opportunities for growth.

Owning a camera doesn't automatically make someone a great photographer. Photography is much more than pressing a shutter button. Every great image is a result of patience, observation, timing, creativity, and continuous learning.

A few things I constantly remind myself whenever I'm behind the lens:
