Grassroot Football Development

Wilsen Initiative | Football Made Me Series

📍 PLAY SAFE WITH DIGNITY

Grassroots football is more than a game. It is a journey of childhood, dreams, opportunities, struggles, and the people who make it possible.

Play Safe With Dignity is a programme under Wilsen Initiative that documents the journey of grassroots football, focusing on the people, experiences, and realities that shape a child's development in the game.

Through the Football Made Me Series, we examine emerging trends and developments at the top of the football pyramid and ask a fundamental question:

⁉️ What ripple effect do these developments have on grassroots football, particularly in underserved and marginalised communities?

Often referred to as ghettos or slums, these communities are home to talented children whose football journeys are shaped not only by their abilities and ambitions but also by the opportunities and resources available to them.

Quote

" We must challenge the conversation and be part of the solution. With the resources within our reach, we strive to make a difference, one child and one team at a time. -   Wilson Masaka, Youth Advocate and Social Entrepreneur

THE CALL TO ACTION: ONE PAIR. ONE PLAYER. ONE DREAM.

You can be part of this journey.

Through the Play Safe With Dignity football shoe campaign, Wilsen Initiative invites individuals, families, friends, organisations, and football stakeholders to support children from underserved communities with football shoes and other essential resources.

You can contribute by:

👟 DONATING FOOTBALL SHOES: New or gently used football boots in good, playable condition.

⚽ DONATING FOOTBALL EQUIPMENT: Footballs, uniforms, and other essential training equipment.

🤝 MOBILISING SUPPORT: Connecting us with individuals and organisations willing to support grassroots football development.

📢 AMPLIFYING THE CAUSE: Sharing our campaign and helping us reach more people who can make a difference.

Every contribution matters. A pair of football shoes can help a child participate in the game with greater comfort, safety, and dignity. A football can create opportunities for an entire team to learn, play, and grow.

Let us move beyond conversations and take collective action to create better opportunities for the next generation through football.

One Pair. One Player. One Dream.

Challenging the Conversation, One Team at a Time

Grassroots Football Development

Yesterday, during the Mashujaa Day public holiday, I had the privilege of facilitating a session and sharing my experiences at a parents’ and guardians’ meeting organised by Mathare Stars Academy.

Based in Mathare North, Mathare Stars Academy is in its early stages of building a formidable structure and establishing systems that will support its long-term growth. The academy's mission is to give children opportunities to play football competitively while exploring other avenues for learning and personal development.

At Wilsen Initiative  (Wi), one of our objectives is to support emerging grassroots teams with the knowledge and skills they need to build sustainable and inclusive models of football development.

One of the biggest challenges facing many grassroots teams is resource mobilisation. Our approach is simple: before seeking external support, we must first identify, organise, and maximise the resources within our reach.

What can we achieve with what we already have? What role can every stakeholder play? How can we establish systems that allow everyone to contribute towards a common goal?

These are some of the conversations we need to have if we want to build stronger grassroots football structures.

The goal is not just to build a football team, but to build a system that supports the team, empowers its players, engages its parents, and creates opportunities for sustainable growth.

Sometimes, the solution starts by changing how we think, what we prioritise, and how we work together.

Let's challenge the conversation, one team at a time.

I Have an IDEA.

SELF MADE SERIES | Semi Za Maja

An Idea Is a Beginning, Not an Achievement.

Having an idea doesn't necessarily mean you possess the knowledge, experience, or expertise required to bring it to life. An idea is a starting point, a spark of creativity that may emerge from observation, curiosity, personal experience, or one of those unexpected aha! moments.

However, having an idea and understanding how to turn it into something meaningful are two different things.

Knowledge is developed through various channels, including education, research, practical experience, observation, mentorship, and continuous learning. These processes help us question our assumptions, refine our thinking, identify opportunities, and understand the possibilities and limitations of our ideas.

Sometimes, an idea may initially appear brilliant but remain vague, incomplete, or impractical. That doesn't mean you should abandon it. Instead, give it room to develop.

Research it. Question it. Learn from others. Test your assumptions. Seek feedback. Refine your approach.

Most importantly, don't confuse the excitement of having an idea with the readiness to execute it.

Before launching anything, allow your idea to go through a process. Establish its purpose, understand the problem it seeks to solve, identify the resources required, and determine how you intend to measure progress.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you begin. Sometimes, starting is part of the learning process. However, there is a difference between starting small with a clear intention and starting randomly without understanding what you hope to achieve.

Intentionality gives your idea direction. Continuous learning gives it room to grow. Action gives it a chance to become reality.

Ultimately, an idea's potential is not determined by how exciting it sounds when it first comes to mind, but by the thought, learning, preparation, and action invested in developing it.

📍 "An idea may spark the vision, but knowledge shapes the direction, intentionality defines the purpose, and action gives it life. Don't just celebrate the idea, do the work to make it matter."— Wilson Masaka Self Made Series | Semi Za Maja

📍 "Don't mistake the excitement of an idea for the wisdom to execute it. Think it through, learn what you don't know, and start with purpose."

— Wilson Masaka | Self Made Series

SEMI ZA MAJA | ALGORITHM VS. HUMAN BEHAVIOUR

Why do some organic social media posts attract hundreds of likes and shares, while others, such as “I'm looking for a job,” receive little engagement?

The algorithm vs. human behaviour.

📱 The Algorithm: Social media platforms use signals such as predicted interest, relevance and engagement to determine which posts people see. Even an organic post may have limited reach.

🧠 Human Behaviour: People naturally engage with different content. Entertainment, humour and success stories may attract quick reactions, while posts about unemployment or personal struggles may require empathy, practical help or connections that people are not ready or able to offer.

🤝 The Reality: Low engagement doesn't necessarily mean people don't care, just as high engagement doesn't always translate into meaningful support.

The big question is: Are we struggling to reach people because of the algorithm, or are we failing to turn our online connections into real-life support systems?

An audience can give you visibility, but meaningful connections can open doors.

LIFE SERIES | TIME MANAGEMENT

 LIFE SERIES | TIME MANAGEMENT

📍 The Time Bank

Time is one of the most valuable investments you can make, yet none of us knows exactly how much remains in our personal time bank.

Unlike money, time spent can never be recovered, borrowed back, or deposited again. Every day, we make withdrawals through the choices we make, the opportunities we pursue, and the things we give our attention to.

Time never loses its value, but how we use it determines what we gain from it.

The goal isn't simply to live longer, but to make the time we have count. What are we learning, building, changing, and contributing? What meaningful impact are we creating, and what will remain when we are no longer here?

The truth is, we cannot manage yesterday because it has already passed, nor can we fully control what tomorrow will bring. We can only make intentional decisions with the time available to us today.

Perhaps the greatest lesson in time management is this: don't just count the years you live; pay attention to what you do with the time you have.

Your time is a limited resource. Invest it wisely.

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE - Play Safe With Diginty

PLAY SAFE WITH DIGNITY | FOOTBALL MADE ME SERIES

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE ⚽

At Wilsen Initiative (Wi), we believe that every child deserves an opportunity to explore their talent, regardless of their background.

Our mission is to support children at their level by:

⚽ Providing footballs that give more children access to the game.

👟 Donating quality football boots to emerging young players who need them most.

👕 Supporting local teams with branded jerseys that build identity, pride, and a sense of belonging.

Since 1997, our commitment to making a difference through football has remained alive.

We understand that we may not have all the resources to change everything at once. However, we believe that donating even one football or one pair of boots is better than doing nothing at all.

Every small contribution can make a meaningful difference in a child's football journey.

📢 CALL TO ACTION

PLAY SAFE WITH DIGNITY | FOOTBALL SHOES DRIVE

We invite friends, well-wishers, football lovers, and partners to join us in making football more accessible to children from underserved communities.

You can support the drive by donating:

1. A football in good condition.

2. A new or gently used pair of football boots.

Football resources that can help a young player pursue their dream with dignity.

One ball can serve many children. One pair of boots can encourage a young player to keep going. Together, we can help change the narrative.

Let's move beyond celebrating talent from the touchline. Let's invest in the journey of the next generation of football stars.

Be part of the journey. Be part of the change.

PLAY SAFE WITH DIGNITY | FOOTBALL MADE ME SERIES

 DID YOU KNOW?

It can be easier for a child to access a smartphone than to own a football. Let that sink in. ⚽📱

How many children from underserved communities own a football of their own?

Sadly, the numbers remain low, and the situation feels much the same as it did more than three decades ago when I was growing up playing football.

In our community, out of 20 children, only one might have owned a football. Today, the story remains remarkably similar. Most children access footballs through local teams, many of which are managed by volunteer coaches who are struggling to make ends meet.

But that's not the only challenge.

For boys and girls aged U10 to U15, accessing a good pair of football boots remains a major hurdle. Back in our day, many of us played barefoot. Looking around today, you can still find children playing barefoot, wearing sandals commonly known as floaters, or even playing in socks.

THE REALITY ON THE GROUND 📸

On Saturday, 10 October 2026, I went out on a mission to document this reality through photography.

What I witnessed was both humbling and inspiring. Despite the challenges of limited resources, inadequate playing environments, and a lack of proper equipment, these young players were still enjoying the beautiful game.

Their passion reminded me of my childhood, when we would play football in the rain, carrying big dreams of becoming great football stars one day.

The talent is there. The passion is there. But do the opportunities and resources match their dreams?

NETWORKING IS MORE THAN COLLECTING CONTACTS

Networking isn't just about:

• Saving someone's phone number.
• Asking for a business card.
• Meeting and chatting with people at an event.
• Following someone on social media.

It is about intentionally building genuine relationships with people who share your interests, values, goals, or professional aspirations  and finding ways to learn from one another, collaborate, exchange ideas, and create value beyond the spaces where you first met.

Exchanging contacts is only the beginning. The real value of networking lies in what you do afterwards: nurturing relationships, staying connected, sharing knowledge, offering support, and exploring opportunities to grow together.

Networking is a skill that can be learned, practised, and developed. Unfortunately, it is rarely taught explicitly in many learning environments, despite its importance in personal growth, career development, entrepreneurship, and community building.

Remember, your network isn't just about who you know. It's also about the relationships you nurture, the value you contribute, and the opportunities you create together.

Don't just collect contacts. Build connections. Create value. Grow together.

The Bottleneck Organisation Culture

DID YOU KNOW? 🤔

Your Board Could Be the Bottleneck Holding Your Organisation Back!

Have you read my latest blog series on organisational culture, behaviour, and the role of the Board in shaping organisational growth?

Board members are not just there to sign cheques, review financial statements, or check bank balances. Their role goes far beyond financial oversight.

A proactive and engaged Board can play a critical role in:

✅ Shaping and strengthening organisational culture.
✅ Mobilising resources and supporting fundraising efforts.
✅ Building strategic partnerships and opening doors to new opportunities.
✅ Providing strategic direction, accountability, and effective governance.
✅ Creating an environment where teams can thrive and organisations can grow.

But what happens when the very people expected to provide strategic direction become the bottleneck?

🎂 The Birthday Question — Part 3
https://wilsenx.blogspot.com/2026/10/bottleneck-part-3-birthday-question.html?m=1

WHERE IS YOUR ORGANISATION LEAKING?

Is it in your systems, your people, your leadership, or perhaps at the Board level? You might be surprised by what you discover!

I'm available for masterclass sessions with teams and organisations ready to reflect, identify bottlenecks, and explore practical ways to improve their culture, governance, and performance.

Invite me for a masterclass session with your team. Let's start asking the right questions.

A QUESTION TO REFLECT ON:

When your contract comes to an end, what will you leave behind?

Your job title, salary, daily routine, and comfortable corner at the office may no longer be yours. But your skills, experience, knowledge, passion, dreams, and the relationships you've built can continue to create value long after you've left.

Your position may be temporary, but what you learn, how you grow, and the impact you make can open doors to new opportunities.

Never let your job title become your entire identity. Keep learning, keep growing, keep building, and keep creating value beyond your current role.

Do More. Be More. Be Different.

📍 The Bottleneck Part 3 : The Birthday Question

So, when your organisation celebrates its next birthday, don't only count the years.

Take stock.

Look at the people.

Look at the culture.

Look at the leadership.

Look at the Board.

Look at the programmes.

Look at the finances.

Look at the partnerships.

Look at the impact.

And most importantly, look at whether the organisation is still becoming what it was created to be.

Because longevity is not the same as sustainability.

An organisation can be old and still be unhealthy.

It can be busy and still be stagnant.

It can have a respected name and still be losing relevance.

The real question is not simply:

“How long have we existed?”

It is:

“After all these years, are we still growing, learning, adapting and creating value?”

That, to me, is the real conversation around Organisational Culture, Behaviour and the Life Cycle of an Organisation.

Do More . Be More . Be Different

The Bottleneck Part 2 : The Board

 Organisation Culture and Behaviour

The Life Cycle of an Organisation

Organisational culture does not exist in isolation. What leadership tolerates eventually becomes part of the culture.

What the Board ignores can become normalised.

What management rewards gets repeated.

What employees experience becomes their understanding of the organisation.

And over time, these behaviours become the organisation’s culture.

That is why organisational culture and behaviour should not be treated as a soft or secondary subject. They are closely connected to performance, innovation, employee retention, partnerships, credibility and ultimately sustainability.

📍 Watch the Red Flags

Organisations rarely wake up one morning and suddenly find themselves in decline. In many cases, there are warning signs long before the crisis becomes obvious.

Some of the red flags include:

1. High employee turnover

When good people continuously leave, it is worth asking why. The issue may not always be salary. It could be leadership, management practices, lack of growth opportunities, poor communication, organisational culture or a loss of confidence in the direction of the organisation.

2. Stagnation and lack of innovation

The same programmes, same approaches and same conversations year after year can be a warning sign. An organisation can remain busy while still moving nowhere. Relevance requires the willingness to learn, adapt, experiment and improve.

3. A decline in donors and partnerships

When donors, funders and strategic partners begin to disengage, an organisation should not only ask, “Where will the next funding come from?” It should also ask, “Why are we losing confidence and relevance among the people and institutions that once believed in our work?”

4. Growing resistance to change

When every new idea is treated as a threat rather than an opportunity to learn, the organisation can slowly become trapped by its past success.

5. Decisions driven by personalities rather than purpose

When organisational decisions become centred around individuals, relationships or personal interests instead of the mission, governance begins to weaken.

6. Poor internal communication

When employees learn important organisational information through rumours, WhatsApp groups or external conversations before hearing it from their own leadership, trust begins to erode.

7. Leadership succession is ignored

An organisation should not be dependent on one individual forever. Sustainable organisations deliberately develop the next generation of leaders and create systems that can outlive personalities.

Do More . Be More . Be Different

https://wilsenx.blogspot.com

The Bottleneck Part 1 : The Board

 Organisation Culture and Behaviour

The Life Cycle of an Organisation

One subject that is dear to me is the life cycle of an organisation. Every organisation has a birthday. It is born out of an idea, a need, a vision or a group of people who believe that something can be done differently. But just like people, organisations grow, mature, experience challenges and, if they are not intentional about renewal, can eventually stagnate or decline.

An organisation’s anniversary, therefore, should be more than a celebration of how far it has come. It should also be an opportunity to ask:

1. Where are we today?

2. What have we become?

3. What is working?

4. What is no longer working?

And what must change for us to remain relevant?

Many organisations that have experienced prolonged stagnation or eventual decline have been affected by a combination of factors. Leadership and governance are often among the biggest pieces of the puzzle.

There is a saying: “The fish rots from the head.” While the “head” is often associated with the CEO or senior management and rightly so, because leadership has a significant role to play, I believe the conversation must go beyond management.

The head of an organisation also includes its Board of Directors or Trustees.

1. What Role Does Your Board Play?

2. Do you know the role of your Board?

3. More importantly, how well is your Board performing that role?

A Board should not simply exist because the organisation’s constitution requires one. It has a responsibility to provide strategic oversight, accountability, governance, stewardship and, where necessary, constructive challenge to management.

A healthy organisation should therefore be intentional about periodically taking stock of its governance structures and auditing Board performance.

1. Are Board members adding value?

2. Are they asking the difficult questions?

3. Are they providing the right oversight?

4. Are they bringing relevant knowledge, networks and experience?

5. Are they helping the organisation think beyond today?

5. Are they holding management accountable while also holding themselves accountable?

Because a Board can either strengthen an organisation or, through weak governance, become part of the reason an organisation loses direction.

Code Fest 2026 at Oasis Mathare

Nurturing the Next Generation of Innovators

It was a great honour to be invited by Oasis Mathare to join the panel of judges at this year’s Oasis Mathare Code Club Hackathon 2026. The event brought together learners from different Code Clubs for a day of coding, creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and celebration of young minds and their innovative ideas.

I enjoyed listening to the learners present their ideas and demonstrate their innovations. It was particularly inspiring to see schools from Mathare and its surrounding areas participate, showcasing what young people can achieve when given the opportunity to explore technology, think critically, and develop solutions to real-world challenges.

Our role as judges was to listen, evaluate the projects, and provide constructive feedback, with outstanding innovations recognised and awarded. Beyond the competition, however, the experience reinforced an important lesson: we need to introduce coding, computers, and technology to learners early in life and make these opportunities accessible to every child, regardless of their background.

During a recent interview with Youth and Urbanism, I was asked what education means to me. Beyond the conventional understanding of education and its outcomes, particularly its connection to employment, my philosophy is simple: education is life.

Education encompasses everything we know, everything we are yet to discover, and the experiences that shape how we understand and interact with the world. In this journey, innovation should take centre stage, enabling learners to move beyond acquiring knowledge to applying it in practical, meaningful ways.

At Oasis Mathare, I was particularly impressed by how the pupils approached problem-solving through technology. From developing educational games to exploring solutions that could help save lives during emergencies, their ideas demonstrated the power of combining creativity, knowledge, and technology to address everyday challenges.

Ultimately, our responsibility is to nurture a generation that does not merely consume digital content but also understands technology, uses it responsibly, and develops the confidence and skills to create. We need to raise smart technology users who can become content creators, innovators, and problem-solvers.

Congratulations to all the participating learners, schools, and everyone at Oasis Mathare who made the event possible. Initiatives like this play an important role in bridging the digital divide, particularly at the community level, where access to technology, digital skills, and learning opportunities can remain limited.

Children and young people have tremendous potential to learn, adapt, experiment, and innovate. When given the right opportunities, tools, guidance, and support, they can develop solutions that shape their communities and influence the future, regardless of where they come from.

The future is not just about teaching children how to use technology; it is about empowering them to use it to create, innovate, and solve problems.

Do More. Be More. Be Different.

Thank You DAD

 TBT #throwbackmemories

Once upon a time, our parents were young too.

Through their influence, love, care, sacrifices, and guidance, we eventually became who we are today.

I came across this photo of my late Dad, and it brought back so many nostalgic memories. It reminded me of the person he was, the life he lived, and the values he passed on to us.

Today, I simply want to say thank you, Dad, for everything. But more importantly, thank you for the priceless gift of values  the values that continue to guide us, shape us, and bind our family together.

Though you are no longer with us, your legacy lives on in the people we have become and in the values we continue to carry forward.

Forever grateful. Forever remembered. ❤️

I AM MY STORY - SELF MADE

 I AM_

MY STORY

Everyone has a personal brand by default. What makes the difference is awareness and deliberate intention, the conscious decision to cultivate and nurture who you are, what you want to become, what you want to be known for, and, ultimately, how people perceive you.

Yesterday, I spent a good part of the evening at Youth and Urbanism in Mathare, where I had the opportunity to share my journey, the W.I.L.S.E.N Philosophy, the I.C.E. Model, the I AM_ Self Made Ideology, and my next plan of action.

I’ll share the recordings once they are out.

On the flip side, remember that we can still bring the conversation to life and capture it at your location through a Master Class Session.

I have always believed that knowledge should move. What we learn should not stop with us. That belief has also shaped Wilsen Initiative (Wi), where the emphasis has been on Inspiring, Connecting and Educating young people while creating opportunities for them to discover, develop and use their talents and skills.

SKILL UP MASTER SESSION

I’m offering one pro-bono 4-hour session to a youth organisation or youth space based in Nairobi.

The offer is valid until the end of October 2026 — one session, one organisation..

If you run or are part of a youth space that would benefit from a practical and engaging Skill Up Master Session, get in touch.

Alternatively, you can invite me for an unlimited paid session under +throughMylens / Consultancy.

THE 5 Ps OF PERSONAL BRANDING

 SELF MADE SERIES.

+throughMylens 📸 | Life Series

Personal branding is not just about a name, logo, title, photograph or social-media presence.

It is about how you present yourself, what you are known for, what you promise, how people experience you, and the evidence you leave behind.

I call it the 5 Ps of Personal Branding:

1. PACKAGE — How do you present yourself?

Your package is the visible side of your brand.

Your name. Your image. Your communication. Your portfolio. Your social-media presence. Your CV. Your website. Even the way you introduce yourself.

Good packaging makes it easier for people to understand who you are and what you represent.

But remember:

Packaging may open the door, but it cannot keep you in the room.

2. POSITION — What do you want to be known for?

Positioning is about the space you occupy in people's minds.

When your name comes up, what do people associate you with?

Photography? Football? Training? Mentorship? Entrepreneurship? Leadership? Creativity?

You don't have to be everything to everybody.

Your skills, experiences, interests and values should gradually create a clear position.

Position gives your brand direction.

3. PROMISE — What can people expect from you?

Every strong personal brand carries a promise.

It answers:

“What can I consistently expect from this person?”

It could be quality, reliability, creativity, knowledge, service, leadership, problem-solving or simply showing up when it matters.

Your promise should not be something you manufacture for marketing.

It should be something you are prepared to consistently deliver.

Your promise creates expectation.

4. PERSONALITY — How do people experience you?

Skills may get you noticed, but personality often determines how you are remembered.

Your attitude. Your behaviour. Your communication. Your values. Your energy. The way you treat people.

Two people can have similar skills, yet leave completely different impressions because of how they make people feel.

Your personality gives your brand its human touch.

And remember:

You control your behaviour, but people form their perception from their experience with you.

Over time:

Behaviour → Habits → Character → Personality → Reputation.

5. PROOF — What evidence supports your brand?

This is where the talk meets the walk.

Anyone can claim to be a photographer, coach, entrepreneur, trainer, mentor or leader.

But what have you actually done?

Where is the work?

Where are the results?

Who have you helped?

What have you built?

What have you learned?

What problems have you solved?

Your portfolio is proof.

Your projects are proof.

Your results are proof.

Your consistency is proof.

The people whose lives you have influenced can become proof.

Proof turns a personal claim into personal credibility.

And perhaps that is the most important part of personal branding:

You don't build a reputation by repeatedly telling people who you are.

You build it by repeatedly showing them.

THE 5 Ps

PACKAGE — How do I present myself?
POSITION — What do I want to be known for?
PROMISE — What can people expect from me?
PERSONALITY — How do people experience me?
PROOF — What evidence supports my brand?

Your Package creates the first impression.

Your Position creates recognition.

Your Promise creates expectation.

Your Personality creates connection.

Your Proof creates credibility.

Put all five together and you begin to build something bigger than a personal brand.

You build a reputation.

Do More. Be More. Be Different.

THREE TYPES OF FRIENDS

We live in a world where almost everyone is busy pursuing something a dream, a goal, a responsibility, a career, or simply trying to get through the routine of everyday life.

Along the way, we meet people.

Some enter our lives because circumstances bring us together. Others find us through a screen. A few stay long enough to become part of our story.

Over time, I have come to think about friendship in three broad ways:

1. FRIENDS FOR THE MOMENT

These are friendships created by a particular situation, environment, or season of life.

Think about school, the workplace, church, fellowship groups, football, community activities, or a particular project. You meet, interact, share experiences and perhaps build a strong connection.

But when the situation comes to an end, the friendship may also fade.

You change jobs. You finish school. The project ends. You move to another place. The fellowship changes.

There is nothing necessarily wrong with this.

Some people are meant to walk with us for a particular season. They may not remain in our lives forever, but that does not make the friendship any less real or valuable.

2. FRIENDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Then there are the people we meet in the digital world.

You may have thousands of followers, friends, connections, or people who regularly like, comment on, share, or react to your content.

But numbers can be deceptive.

Having thousands of followers does not necessarily mean having thousands of friends.

Among all those connections, there may be a much smaller group that consistently engages with your work, supports your journey, checks in on you, celebrates your milestones, challenges your thinking, or simply remains present.

Social media may introduce us to people we have never physically met. Yet, through continuous interaction, some of these connections can become surprisingly meaningful.

A like can become a conversation.

A conversation can become a connection.

And a connection, with time, can become friendship.

3. FRIENDS FOR LIFE

Then there are those rare friendships that go beyond the circumstances that brought you together.

These are the people who, with time, become family.

They may be people you grew up with, worked with, went to school with, worshipped with, played football with, or met through a completely unexpected encounter.

Some may even have started as social-media connections.

What makes the difference is not necessarily where you met, but what happens afterwards.

Through continuous interaction, trust, shared experiences, mutual support, and sometimes a common goal or purpose, the relationship develops a deeper meaning.

These are the friends who remain relevant even when the original reason you met no longer exists.

The workplace may change.

The school may be long forgotten.

The event may be over.

The football tournament may have ended.

The social-media post may have disappeared into the timeline.

But the friendship remains.

FRIENDSHIP IS A JOURNEY

Perhaps friendship is not really about how many people we know, but about the depth and quality of the connections we build.

Some people come into our lives for a moment.

Some remain connected from a distance.

And a few become part of our lives for the long haul.

I am grateful for everyone I have interacted with across the many spaces and seasons of my life.

And especially to those I have never physically met, but who, through social media, have remained good friends beyond a simple like, follow, or comment.

Because sometimes, what starts as a digital connection becomes something much more human.

A moment becomes a conversation.

A conversation becomes a connection.

A connection becomes friendship.

And friendship, with time, can become family.

Nostalgic Throwback

I AM_

Teacher • Mentor • Facilitator

Yesterday, while looking through some old documents, I came across a piece of paper that had been signed by my students more than ten years ago.

I stopped.

For a moment, that piece of paper transported me back into that classroom.
The faces.
The conversations.
The energy.
The questions.
The learning.
The memories came rushing back with an almost unexplainable nostalgia.
And I smiled.

Because sometimes we become so busy moving forward that we forget to pause and recognise how far we have travelled.
That old piece of paper reminded me that the work we do today can leave footprints that we may not immediately see.

There are the little things that stay with you.

~ The thank you messages.
~ The positive words of acknowledgement.
~ The feedback from a student or mentee.
The dinner organised at the end of an assignment or contract.
~ The unexpected message from someone you trained years ago.
~ These moments may look small, but they become part of the bigger story.

Today, I am still training children and young people, although increasingly through consultancy, facilitation, mentorship and community initiatives.

The platforms may have changed. The subjects may have evolved. The technology has certainly changed.
But the purpose remains the same:
Share knowledge. Transfer skills. Create opportunities. Inspire confidence.
I am grateful to every organisation that trusted me with an opportunity.

Do More. Be More. Be Different.
