What is culture?
Culture in the simplest explanation is the way of life. I posted a simple query on what is culture online and came across the answers below; source: http://www.answers.com/topic/culture
a. The totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought.
b. These patterns, traits, and products considered as the expression of a particular period, class, community, or population: Edwardian culture; Japanese culture; the culture of poverty.
c. These patterns, traits, and products considered with respect to a particular category, such as a field, subject, or mode of expression: religious culture in the Middle Ages; musical culture; oral culture.
d. The predominating attitudes and behavior that characterize the functioning of a group or organization.
They said pictures speak louder than words, and I totally agree with the statement. Anyway do you know what this picture depicts? And from which culture is it found? Don’t guess too much, I hereby introduce to you what they called ‘Lunyu’ which is found in the Luo community coming from the lakeside. Its main purpose is for smoking fish so that they can be preserved for a long time and when it is not in use some people use it for drying utensil. So if you come across a smoked fish in Nairobi know it’s from ‘Lunyu’.
Please forward me a picture that represent your culture and a small caption/explanation about it, I would love to share it. Let us all embrace and respect our cultural diversity. Email me at Wilson.masaka[at]gmail.com
